Science & the Public: Warming Marches in

March 2012 was the balmiest on record for the continental United States, setting a mountain of new records

Web edition : Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

People may argue about why Earth is warming, how long its fever will last and whether any of this warrants immediate corrective action. But whether Earth is warming is no longer open to debate. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has just published domestic examples to reinforce what Americans witnessed last month ? either on TV or in their own backyards.

Let's start with the heat: March 2012 temperatures averaged 10. 6? Celsius (51? Fahrenheit) ? or 5.5 ?C warmer than the 20th century average across the contiguous United States. Throughout the more than 115 years that national U.S. weather data have been compiled, only one other month (January 2006) surpassed this past March in its departure?from the average.

In all, U.S. weather stations logged almost 15,300 all-time highs, last month,?roughly half of them for nighttime temps. ?There were 21 instances of the nighttime temperatures being as warm, or warmer, than the existing record daytime temperature for a given date,? NOAA?s new analysis finds. Only Alaska bucked the trend; its temperatures were the tenth coolest for March.

Nor was last month the only anomalous period. The first three months of 2012 also set a record for toastiness across the contiguous United States, with an average temperature throughout the period of some 5.6 degree above the long-term average. Sixteen states had temperatures ranking among their 10 warmest for the quarter. None of the contiguous states posted a quarterly composite for January through March that fell below its long-term average.
?
In many regions, March weather anomalies sparked conversations. At the Society of Toxicology meeting in San Francisco, for instance, I ran into three researchers who remarked on needing sweaters. All said it was warmer at home than at the meeting ? home being Michigan, Maine and Indiana. In the DC area, people oggled earlier-than-normal blooms in their yards and upon century-old cherry trees lining the Tidal Basin.

Nationally, the entire?2011-to-2012 cold season (October through March) proved especially mild. It was the second-warmest on record across the 48 states.

Accompanying the heat came a diminished rainfall. Nationally, the?2012?precipitation average is somewhat more than 0.7 centimeters (0.29 inches) below average. As of last week, one-third of the lower 48?states were experiencing drought ? up from 18.8 percent this time last year.

The heat stirred up weather systems, driving plenty of big storms. March 2012 saw more than 220 tornadoes ? or almost 2.8 times the long-term average for that month. One particularly severe spell on March 2-3 caused 40 deaths and racked up an estimated $1.5 billion in commercial and property losses.

The ?Climate Extremes Index? ? a scale introduced 16 years ago ? attempts to quantify trends in extreme weather by identifying the percent of the contiguous states that fall outside the norm of temperature, precipitation, severe drought and hurricanes (or tropical storms) making landfall. So far, the 2012 index rating?is 39 percent, or about twice the expected value.?

Weather records are just one quantifiable?measure of warming. Many others can be harder to eyeball. For instance, the annual mean sea surface temperature for last year was the 9th warmest for the period that started in 1880. (The 10 warmest years have all occurred since January 2000.)

We reported a wealth of analyses last year pointing to the Arctic having evolved ?to a new normal,? with warmer, drier weather. Last July, researchers?announced that?relatively deep coastal waters off Greenland are now expected to warm considerably faster than elsewhere by the year 2100, exaggerating the risk of ice sheet melting and global sea-level rise.

Many people won't complain about a somewhat balmier winter or marginally early spring. But warming isn't a cold-weather phenomenon. It's a 24/7 event occurring year-round. And at least here in the Nation's Capital, an increase in?the normal summer-long muggy heat is not something I can imagine anyone welcoming.

Pest Control For Rodent And Pests Control

Pest Control is for everything from rodents, to ants, to birds to bed bugs. It is for the interior and exterior of the property and a pest control service is something that provides extermination of unwanted pests and rodents either one time or regularly. There are many homes that without regular Pest Control Services would be overridden with ants, rodents and other unwanted pests.

As a homeowner, the time for a pest control service is before you have a problem, as many of the unwanted pests and rodents can cause damage to your property. Many homeowners with great intentions try to remedy their problems themselves, however, without the proper equipment and supplies, as well as, safety knowledge, they are likely to create more damage than good. Pests hide extremely well, and they will just gather into another cranny in the cement or home someplace to continue their growth and reproduce.

When a home is fully infested, it is difficult to reach many of the areas of infestation, and a pest control service is essential.
?
Safety is also extremely important, and homeowners must be aware that before they use dangerous pesticides that they can harm the health of themselves and their loved ones. If you are using pesticides yourself, then be sure that you properly protect yourself and to use the right amount, as too much may be sure to attack and kill the rodents and pests, but, it could create a very toxic threat to you and your family.
If you think that you have a infestation problem, then you should call a professional exterminator for your problem. Calling just one shouldn't be done either. Call a few and get quotes from different services, asking them what their service will cover and the chemicals that they use. Also, be sure that the company is licensed and insured. The company should come to your home to look around your grounds and provide you with a quote, going over all details of their services.
?
There are many sources to find a professional exterminator, the Yellow Pages, recommendations of friends and family and right here on the Internet. In fact, the Internet is one of the best means to find a professional exterminator as you are provided a wealth of information from the pest control service company's website alone.
?
During your initial call to the company, you should ask them the number of years of experience they have in the pest control industry. Also, discuss the types of services that they offer, and ask them to come to your home to provide you with a free quote. You will also want to ask them about the training that each of their technicians has, and if you will be provided the same technician should you decide to have services performed on a regular basis.
?
Pests and rodents can create a terrible infestation in a home, and the time to hire a pest control service is before you have a problem, and damage done to your home.

People Need To Stop Freaking Out Over Chinese Investments In The Caribbean

(AP Photo/Tim Aylen)

Li Ruogu of the Export-Import Bank of China finances a resort in the Bahamas

The New York Times seems to be concern trolling on the issue of Chinese investment in the Caribbean. To be fair, though, it?s not just the NYT that?s playing this game, but folks in the U.S. government. You?ve seen how this goes down in the media: first a ?threat? is presented, always as a concern of others, and then later on in the article, there is an acknowledgment that the danger is either unfounded or the fear is premature.

What are we left with? Usually the message in the headline, plus a vague sense of unease. In this case, the headline reads: ?U.S. Alert as China?s Cash Buys Inroads in Caribbean.? Scary, no? This also feeds into the general uneasiness Americans are feeling about a rising China. Isn?t this special?

A few specifics so you can see the game in action. Here?s an opening gambit, setting out the ?threat?:

China?s economic might has rolled up to America?s doorstep in the Caribbean, with a flurry of loans from state banks, investments by companies and outright gifts from the government in the form of new stadiums, roads, official buildings, ports and resorts in a region where the United States has long been a prime benefactor.

The Chinese have flexed their economic prowess in nearly every corner of the world. But planting a flag so close to the United States has generated intense vetting ? and some raised eyebrows ? among diplomats, economists and investors.

Note the language. ?China?s economic might? ? a threat in and of itself. This has ?rolled up to America?s doorstep? ? China is spreading out across the globe like Nazi Germany in those old propaganda films, painting each country it taints an evil red color. America?s doorstep of course is the Caribbean, whose proximity to the U.S. has been used for decades now to the detriment of the Cubans. The Chinese are ?planting a flag? ? a symbol of ownership that has somewhat of a colonial flavor to it. And finally, there are raised eyebrows among diplomats, economists and investors; important folks are very worried about all this.

I don?t know about you, but I just got so scared I soiled my undergarments.

Apparently some idiots at the State Department are also nervous:

American diplomatic cables released through WikiLeaks and published in the British newspaper The Guardian quoted diplomats as being increasingly worried about the Chinese presence here ?less than 190 miles from the United States? and speculating on its purpose. One theory, according to a 2003 cable, suggested that China was lining up allies as ?a strategic move? for the eventual end of the Castro era in Cuba, with which it has strong relations.

My goodness. The Chinese are lending money, building roads and sports stadiums, and insinuating themselves with the locals. What on earth are they up to? Sounds like USSR/Cuba all over again. Sort of. Well, not at all really. I?m not sure if the State Department guys are up on the news, but the Chinese don?t need to invest in the Caribbean to be close to the U.S. ? they can invest in the U.S. directly! They don?t need to ?roll up? to America?s doorstep, they?ve already been invited inside and asked if they wish to purchase any of the furniture.

The Times article does, later on in the article of course, point out the reasons why ?China? (i.e. Chinese financial institutions, construction companies, commodities traders, etc.) are making moves in the Caribbean. First and foremost, there is money to be made. Imagine that. Second, the Caribbean is home to quite a few very small nations whose political loyalties can be purchased on the cheap. So if China lends a few million RMB to these guys, the next time an argument ensues regarding whether Taiwan should join an international organization as an independent country, China should be able to count on votes from the Caribbean. Third, indirectly, the U.S. hasn?t been paying sufficient attention to the region.

?They are buying loyalty and taking up the vacuum left by the United States, Canada and other countries, particularly in infrastructure improvements,? said Sir Ronald Sanders, a former diplomat from Antigua and Barbuda.

?If China continues to invest the way it is doing in the Caribbean, the U.S. is almost making itself irrelevant to the region,? he added. ?You don?t leave your flank exposed.?

?Leave your flank exposed?? Calm down, Field Marshal. We?re talking about foreign aid and infrastructure construction, not the Franco-Prussian War.

You might think that if a group of nations on America?s ?doorstep? needed foreign aid, it would be the U.S., not China, that would be giving it. Apparently not ? most Americans don?t believe in foreign aid, and their government representatives are only keen if it goes to arms purchases by Israel and Egypt.

But I digress.

So what?s the bottom line here? China has found an opportunity to make some money and find a few cheap friends. Unless the U.S. is willing to put up some cash, what?s the problem with this? It?s not like China is putting missile sites in Antigua or threatening to censor Jimmy Buffett?s lyrics (the latter might actually be a good thing). Are these State Department goofballs worried that Chinese?largess will push Jamaica over to the Communist camp? Domino Theory 2.0?

China in the Caribbean ? sounds like a scary conspiracy, but the facts do not reveal a threat to America?s shores. As the philosopher said:??Jah show every mon him hand, and Jah has show I mine.??I have no idea what that means, but China?s position in the Caribbean is quite easy to discern.

Choosing Your Perfect Bridal Party | Robbin Montero's A-Dream ...

He?s popped the question, you?ve told your parents, and now?s the time to tell your friends and decide who you want to support you down the aisle! Selecting a bridal party for your special day takes some thought. Here are a few guidelines to consider: (1) Don?t worry about matching with the groom?s side. Having those you love by your side is more important than symmetry; (2) Be sure that who you ask can afford the costs associated with the wedding (i.e., a bridesmaid dress, accessories, shower hosting/gifts, bachelor party, etc.); (3) Don?t feel you need to ask a friend who asked you to be in her wedding. Your relationship may have changed over the years, and current relationships are the ones you should consider. Finally, don?t be disappointed if one of your selections bows out. It?s better to know now than later!

Henry's 3 goals lead Red Bulls

By The Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:47 a.m. ET April 1, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Thierry Henry scored his first career MLS hat trick and set up goal to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 5-2 victory over the expansion Montreal Impact on Saturday.

Kenny Cooper and Mehdi Ballouchy also scored as the Red Bulls won their second straight at home after losing their opening two games on the road. New York has nine goals since returning home, with Henry getting five and two assists.

Sanna Nyassi and Justin Mapp scored for winless Montreal (0-3-1). The Impact, who had one goal in their first three games, had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Red Bulls' French international took over.

The Red Bulls' win did not come without a cost. Midfielder Rafa Marquez suffered a groin injury and didn't play in the second half.

CREW 1, TORONTO FC 0

TORONTO (AP) - Bernardo Anor scored in the 56th minute to lead Columbus past Toronto FC.

Anor put the Crew in front after Toronto captain Julian de Guzman lost possession in midfield. Columbus drove toward the goal and, after a nice give and go, a clearing attempt by defender Logan Emory bounced straight back to Anor, who banged it in from close range.

Columbus (2-1-0) improved to 2-0-5 at BMO Field.

Toronto FC (0-3-0) is winless in MLS play but is just one game away from the CONCACAF Champions League final.

WHITECAPS 0, UNION 0

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Vancouver's stout defense was sharp once again and the Whitecaps remained unbeaten.

The Whitecaps (2-0-2) haven't allowed a goal in their first four MLS matches, encompassing 360 minutes. The league record for scoreless stretch to open the season is 421 set by the New York Red Bulls in 2007.

Vancouver forward Sebastien Le Toux, Philadelphia's career leader with 25 goals, received a rousing ovation from the crowd when his name was announced during the starting lineups. It was his first game back since he was traded in the offseason.

The Union (0-3-1) are one of three remaining winless teams along with Montreal and Toronto.

EARTHQUAKES 1, SOUNDERS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - Chris Wondolowski scored on a penalty kick midway through the first half, and Jon Busch earned his second straight shutout for San Jose.

Wondolowski's goal was his fourth this season and his third game-winner of the year for the Earthquakes (3-1-0). It also was his fourth against the Sounders, more than any other San Jose player.

Busch made six saves on 18 Seattle shots for his third shutout in four games. He has allowed just one goal this season.

The Sounders (2-1-0) fell short of matching the best-ever start in club history. As an expansion team in 2009, Seattle won its first three games.

REAL SALT LAKE 3, TIMBERS 2

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Kyle Beckerman scored in extra time after Jonny Steele tied it in the 89th minute for Real Salt Lake.

Steele, a late substitute, got the ball past diving Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins, after RSL (3-1-0) fell behind 2-1 in the second half. Then Beckerman's goal stunned the sellout crowd at Jeld-Wen Field.

Darlington Nagbe scored two goals for the Timbers (1-2-1), becoming the first Portland player with multiple goals in a game since Jorge Perlaza scored a two in the Timbers' home opener last year, their inaugural MLS season.

Alvaro Saborio, returning to the starting lineup for the first time this season, scored on a penalty kick in the first half for RSL.

REVOLUTION 3, GALAXY 1

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Kelyn Rowe and Chris Tierney scored in the first half to lead New England past short-handed Los Angeles.

Saer Sene scored in the 65th minute for the Revolution (2-2-0).

The defending champion Galaxy (1-2-0), playing without captain Landon Donovan, sidelined by a quad strain, avoided the shutout when Robbie Keane knocked in a pass from Edson Buddle in the 78th minute.

Los Angeles also played without David Beckham in the second half.
