Last year, we tried 50 For 50, and got halfway done before things cropped up. This year, Alligator Army is coming back with 100 For 100, with 100 articles in the 100 days leading up to the first Florida Gators football game of the 2012 season, and will run down storylines, profile players, examine history, and make some predictions, possibly all haphazardly. The only thing we can promise is that each day's entry will bring us all one step closer to "Herrrrrrrrre ... come the Gators!"

And maybe that you'll get a couple of these a day for the next week or so.

Remember when Tim Tebow was all over every awards list, and seemingly spent most of the Decembers of his last three seasons in Gainesvile at awards banquets? That's not so much the case today.

The Maxwell and Bednarik Award watch lists are both out today, and the only Gators player on either list is Sharrif Floyd, who makes the Bednarik list. Floyd is arguably the most talented player on Florida's roster, quick and powerful up front ? I know FlaGators really likes his talents, but I think he's still impaneled, and thus will not be able to back this up. But the chances Floyd has the sort of season that wins him the Bednarik Award seem slim to me.

There's significant stupidity inherent in preseason watch lists: It would be silly to name just a few players, and it's sillier still to name 65 players as "watch list" representatives, because that results in guys like Curtis McNeal (1,005 rushing yards for USC last year!) and Johnathan Franklin (you could have given me his conference and five guesses and I wouldn't have known what team he played for) being put on par with Montee Ball, Landry Jones, Denard Robinson, and Tyler Wilson.

But a team only having a few players on those watch lists says that few think that team has elite talent. It'll be up to Floyd and the Gators to prove otherwise.

New research finds increased growth responsible for color changes in coral reefs

Research from the University of Southampton and National Oceanography, Southampton has provided new insight into the basic immune response and repair mechanisms of corals to disease and changing environmental conditions.

The study, published in the latest issue of the journal Coral Reefs, found that increased growth is the underlying physiological process associated with disease, wounding and stress-related colour changes in reef-building corals.

The study investigated distinct green fluorescent protein (GFP)-like pigments responsible for the green, red and purple-blue colours of many reef-building corals.

By examining these GFP-like pigments in four coral species from the Red Sea, the Arabian/Persian Gulf and Fiji, researchers found that their presence indicates growing tissue in growing branch tips and margins of healthy coral colonies; as well as in disturbed colony parts, compared to undisturbed areas.

Dr Joerg Wiedenmann, Senior Lecturer of Biological Oceanography and Head of the Coral Reef Laboratory at the University of Southampton, who led the study, says: "The specific pigment signatures that we observed, demonstrate that locally accelerated growth in the presence of foreign biological material, represents a novel component of the innate immune response of reef corals in which the animals try to neutralise potentially dangerous organisms by overgrowing them.

"We found that increased growth is the underlying physiological process of the 'pink-blue spot syndrome', a colour change linked, for instance, with wounding of Red Sea corals. We also found a strong increase of red fluorescence in growth margins in the presence of gastropods and tube worms."

The researchers were able to detect coral growth and tissue proliferation by using the excellent biomarker properties of GFP-like pigments. Fluorescent proteins from reef corals are routinely applied as markers in biomedical and pharmaceutical research, because their fluorescence can be easily detected.

Dr Wiedenmann, who is based at National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, adds: "The future of coral reefs is strongly dependent on management strategies that can promote their recovery and resilience. The success of these efforts will rely on the identification of particularly vulnerable areas or regions affected by high levels of stress.

"Coral reef monitoring will benefit from this study as the use of these GFP-like pigments as biomarkers can be used as indicators of mechanical stress/damage inflicted, for instance, by swimmers or divers or give an indication of parasites or disease.

"Our conclusions have important implications for predictions of the negative impact of changing environmental conditions on coral reefs. Reduced coral growth rates anticipated in response to ocean acidification, warming and nutrient enrichment of coral reef waters will result in a reduced capability of the corals to defend themselves against colonisation by other organisms."

In order to more faithfully live into the vision of MainStreet,?we have signed a lease with Stonegate Plaza?where MainStreet?s new home will be. The Pastoral Advisory Team and Leadership Team have prayerfully sought God?s guidance throughout the search process and are confident this facility will best help us expand our ministry presence in Mound in the coming days.

Our location places us in an active shopping center off a major road (Shoreline Drive) with the Early Childhood Family Education center on one side and the Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN) on the other. We are ideally situated to reach both young families disconnected from church and hurting people looking for support and hope. The new facility will include a spacious cafe/lobby, 150-200 seat worship area, kids ministry area and nursery, pastor?s office and conference room, large restrooms and much needed storage. We will have an attractive ministry space for Sunday morning worship as well as weekday ministries including The Alley youth ministry, adult classes, prayer gatherings, Friday night open mic events, youth outreach concerts, Merge forums, after school spot for youth, and much more!

What?s Next?

We will begin work on the buildout immediately and try to have it completed mid-September for youth ministry launch. We will do as much of the labor ourselves as God?s people offer their time and skills. We are asking MainStreet folks to increase their weekly giving to cover the monthly rent. We are seeking additional outside donors to help fund much of the build out costs. We are a small church with a big dream and a big God. We are depending on everyone stepping up to help make this a reality.

Jubilant Libyan voters mark a major step toward democracy after decades of erratic one-man rule, casting their ballots Saturday in the first parliamentary election after last year's overthrow and killing of longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi. In the capital, Tripoli, residents turned out in droves to cast votes for the 200-seat legislature. Lines began to form outside polling centers more than an hour before they were scheduled to open. Policemen and soldiers were guarding the centers, searching voters as well as election workers.

Cisco routers updated with anti-porn, anti-piracy user agreement

A number of Cisco customers woke up this week to find that their routers, normally straightforward devices that perform the grunt work of Internet communications, had signed themselves up for a service that not only moved critical functions to a new cloud service, but included a terms of service that forbade porn and suggested Cisco would be recording your browsing habits. The company has since written a none-too-convincing blog post?in an attempt to reassure customers and provided instructions on how to roll back the update.

The "Linksys?Smart Wi-Fi Routers" (models EA2700, EA3500 and EA4500) were introduced in April as simple but powerful home routers with features like parental controls, media streaming, and so on. The various cloud features were potentially useful, and until the update rolled out, totally optional. The new firmware enabled them by default, opting owners of the routers?into a new and troubling user agreement.

Restrictive and arbitrary terms of service are nothing new, but in this case they were totally unexpected and especially disconcerting. Here were the main three problems with the terms and privacy statement:

• The terms forbid using the service "for obscene, pornographic, or offensive purposes" ? though these are not defined, and it isn't clear how you would use router configuration software for obscene purposes.
  
• In the original privacy statement, which ExtremeTech found still intact on Google's servers, Cisco says that they "may keep track of certain information related to your use of the Service, including but not limited to the status and health of your network and networked products; which apps relating to the Service you are using; which features you are using within the Service infrastructure; network traffic (e.g., megabytes per hour); Internet history..."?Naturally, people are confused as to why the people who made the router should be recording the Internet history of the people using it.
  
• Lastly, although Cisco says that the update was only applied to people who had opted in by allowing automatic updates, the privacy policy still reads: "in order to provide an optimal experience on your home network, some updates may still be automatically applied, regardless of the auto-update setting." So if you've opted out, they can still opt you back in.
  

Cisco has said that they do not "actively track, collect or store personal info or usage data for any other purposes, nor is it transmitted to third parties." But the assurance seems at odds with the stated limitations and information they intend to record. It's unlikely that Cisco, a highly successful company with a reputation to maintain, would find much money or benefit in scraping some data from its consumer-level customers. But that's not really what people are angry about.

This unasked-for update is still a worrying?indicator of the future of consumers' ability to control their own devices. If the company that made the device can update it any time they want, along with their privacy statement and miles-long terms of service, what assurance does an average consumer have that their privacy and preferences are being respected?
