Who should play Hillary Clinton in new movie?

By Courtney Hazlett, NBC News

Gary Cameron / Reuters file

When "Rodham," a screenplay about the life of Hillary Clinton, made the list of Hollywood's hottest unproduced scripts, political wonks from L.A. to the Beltway erupted with excitement.

Penned by Young-Il Kim, the script's The Blacklist?description reads: "During the height of the Watergate scandal, rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas."

Though the project remains in the earliest stages of development, and its debut on the big screen could be years away, everyone wants to know: Who will play Hillary Clinton?

Various actresses have been reading for the part, a source close to the production confirms to NBC, but no one is officially attached. Potential directors are also in discussions for the project, which is being produced by The Arlook Group and Temple Hill Entertainment (which also produced the "Twilight" series).

The script begins with Clinton's time at Yale, and followers her as she meets and falls in love with Bill Clinton, and then progresses through her and Bill's major life milestones up until shortly after Nixon's resignation.

Bill Clinton has expressed interest in Meryl Streep for the title role, but sources involved with the production say they're keen to cast an actress who looks more like Hillary during her law school years and early days as an attorney.

Q&A with Warm Bodies author Isaac Marion | People's Critic: Film ...

Author Isaac Marion?s breakout novel, Warm Bodies, started as a short story and has blossomed into a feature film. I sat with Isaac to discuss his involvement in the film, what characters he identified with, and where he would go in a real zombie apocalypse.

I read an interview you did with Wired where you talked about being involved with the Warm Bodies movie. What was that process like?

Isaac Marion: Coming to the set wasn?t really involvement; it was a courtesy to invite me to watch. My involvement was earlier in the process where they would consult me on people they thought about casting. They didn?t ask for my approval, it was more or less ?This is what we?re thinking?, and it was giving notes on the script. When Jonathan Levine was writing the script, he would call me up and ask me what I thought. I gave notes on the script and notes on an early cut of the movie. It wasn?t collaboration, but they were interested in my opinion. It didn?t feel like a courtesy brush of either. It was surprising because I heard that doesn?t happen often.

I hear that a lot. They?ll invite authors on set and tell them, ?Thanks for coming, but this is the direction we?re going with this movie?.

IM: If I had a problem with the direction maybe we would?ve bumped heads. I knew what direction they were going to go. I understood why, so I didn?t have a problem with it. It was more about the execution. It was apparent to me from the beginning they weren?t trying to mangle the story.

When you started with the Warm Bodies short story, did you have any idea where it was going?

IM: No. Even less so than anything else I?ve written. When I wrote the story it was a departure from the regular stuff I write. It was more lighthearted and more pop culture-y. Using zombies isn?t something I normally do. It was a very short story about a zombie talking about life in the apocalypse. I didn?t even know if I wanted to post it. I was thinking, ?This is dumb.? [laughs] I put it out there and people loved it. It got me thinking a little more and wondering if there was a deeper story. That story became apparent as I expanded to write the novel. When I first started that was the furthest thing from my mind. Even as I was writing it was like ?Hey. I?m writing a zombie novel?. I never thought this would be my creative find.

I think people relate to zombie stories like The Walking Dead or Dawn of the Dead the same way they do with Warm Bodies. R?s character in Warm Bodies is on this path and he desperately wants his life to change. He?s going around in circles and he?s not sure how he got there. A lot of people live that life.

IM: Warm Bodies ended up becoming one of the most personal relatable things I?ve written. As I was figuring out the story, it lined up with a lot of feelings I was having at that time in my life. It was actually about my experience with the world and trying to figure out who I am. It was trying to establish a connection to the rest of society and humanity. I understand people not expecting to take it seriously. Most reviews that I read start with ?This sounded like a stupid idea, but it went in a different direction?. I?m glad it?s a surprise and is catching people off guard.? With the movie, the promotion is geared a bit younger. You go expecting a lighthearted movie, but it?s a lot deeper than the trailer suggest. The book is even darker and heavier than that.

Most of the personal stories we tell are a little dark.

IM: When I was writing I wasn?t thinking ?Let me write this zombie novel?. I was thinking about this really dark story I had in my head and it somehow ended up coming out through the vehicle of zombies and I wanted people to see it how I saw it. From the outside it looks like dumb concept. At best it looks like silly concept that could be a entertaining romp.

What character in the book do you relate to the most?

IM: R is somewhat based on me, or at least an earlier version of me before I figured out how to function in the world. I put a lot of myself into R. The combination of R and Perry is more or less who I am. I put a lot of my feeling and experiences into them. I was much more alienated when I was younger. My gap between what I thought in my head and what I expressed was much more pronounced back then so I drew on that experience.

Have you always been a writer?

IM: I started writing with serious intent when I was 14 when I started writing a book. I always dabbled in it and wrote little books. It occurred to me that I could write a book when I was 14 so I created two installments of what was going to be an epic fantasy series, but they?re terrible. Nobody is going to see them as long as I?m alive. In my early 20?s I wrote one more that?s a bit more serious.

I feel like each thing I?ve written is drastically better than the last thing, sometimes by huge leaps. Hopefully that trend will continue.

Did Warm Bodies present any crazy reactions from your friends and family due to the subject matter?

IM: There were two sides to that reaction ? one of them is from people like my mom or grandmother. They hear about it and want to support. The book keeps getting pitched as a Young Adult book, but there?s stuff I didn?t want my parents reading in there. I had to grit my teeth and deal with it. On the other side is the reaction from my smart friends who say ?You?re writing about zombies huh? That?s where you?re going with your literary career?? [laughs].

I was on Twitter watching people?s responses to the Warm Bodies trailer. A lot of them were turned off because it looked like Twilight with zombies.

IM: You should?ve seen the reactions before the trailer came out. A lot of people were put at ease by the trailer because before that was a promo image that looks a lot like the Twilight poster and everyone though it was a joke. The image was never intended to be the poster, but it got out there and they put it side-by-side with Twilight. They told me to leave it on and it would all go away [laughs].

I know some of your original story had to be omitted because of the PG=13 rating. Was there anything you hoped they kept in the film?

IM: As far as content, I knew they were planning to go for the PG-13 rating. It wasn?t going to be gory or have creepy necrophilia sex. I guess it?s not necrophilia if the two corpses are having sex [laughs]. I knew that stuff wouldn?t be in the movie. Honestly, they got away with a lot more than I thought they would. I was happy with that.

The rating system is all over the place.

IM: They have some bizarre rules. There is actually a number of times you can say certain words. Technically you can say the f-word once in any PG-13 movie but it?s related to what else is in the movie too.

There was a f-bomb in X-Men First Class.

IM: The great thing about is they used it in the perfect moment.

Was there a scene in the film that you were happy at how it turned out?

IM: I was really amazed at how rich the environments were with the budget they had. I Am Legend did it well, but they had a $100 million budget. I feel like Warm Bodies achieved similar effects with clever locations and getting the angles right. One of the biggest parts was this abandoned airport they found in Montreal. I always thought they would never find an airport, and they?d have to replace it with a coffee shop. The airport was already run down and they dressed it up some more. Most of the time I was on set was when they were shooting there. It was just how I imagined it with the fog, sun coming through the windows, and debris all over the place. It felt like a different world.

If there was a zombie apocalypse, where?s the first place you?d go.

IM: It depends on what type of zombies. Fast or slow?

Fast zombies and the disease isn?t airborne. You have to be scratched or bitten to get infected.

IM: Probably go gather up as much supplies as I could and head for the country. It?s a tough question. In Warm Bodies, they find stadiums and hold up in there. In that world it?s not only the zombies you have to worry about, it?s the people. It?s probably smart to be walled in.

Epic Citadel tech demo arrives on Android phones

If you?re a gamer, then you?ve heard of the Unreal Engine. No ifs, no buts, if you?re a gamer, then you?ve likely already played many games that use it, but what you might not know is that creator Epic has been working on bringing a tech demo of it onto Android phones. Well, they now have, and here it is! Say hello to Epic Citadel?

Right then, that?s not a game, but damn, if that ain?t impressive! What you?re seeing there is a tech demo, to show off how well Unreal can run on Android phones. Well, it turns out that it runs really rather well indeed?

What the demo is, right, is a fully rendered castle and keep, that you can wander round while having a look at things (in that way, it?s essentially Karl Pilkington: The Game), but what?s really cool is how bleedin? gorgeous the world looks. It may not look quite as mind-blowingly stunning as modern Unreal Engine games (Dishonored, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron immediately spring to mind), but seriously, it looks a console game from this generation. We?re not talking last-gen PS2-era graphics, here; this really could pass for a console game from (albeit early on in) this generation.

It looks brilliant on 720p phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3, too; I can only imagine how gobsmacking it looks on 1080p phones like the Sony Xperia Z?

Oh, and also, there?s one other intriguing possibility to consider, here. With the release of the Epic Citadel demo on Android, it may be an indication that us Android users are going to be getting one of the best mobile game franchises ever made, a game that sells like gangbusters (and with very good reason) on the likes of the iPhone 5. Yes, I mean the Infinity Blade series.

I really hope that bit comes true?

More news as it happens! And be sure to subscribe now to get all the latest action from the world of mobile phones!

Gonzalez returns to US after 2-year absence

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:17 p.m. ET Jan. 29, 2013

HOUSTON (AP) - Defender Omar Gonzalez has returned to the U.S. national team lineup after a two-year absence.

The 6-foot-5 Los Angeles Galaxy defender started at center back in Tuesday night's exhibition game against Canada, among 11 changes U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann made from November's 2-2 tie at Russia.

He was on a backline with three players making their national team debuts: right back Tony Beltran, center back Matt Besler and left back Justin Morrow.

Kyle Beckerman was in midfield, joined by Brad Evans, Graham Zusi and Brad Davis, who plays for the Houston Dynamo and was suiting up for the U.S. for the first time since 2010. Eddie Johnson and Chris Wondolowski were at forward. Wondolowski, who turned 30 on Monday, was still seeking his first goal for the Americans in his 10th appearance.

Gonzalez made his national team debut in August 2010 against Brazil and played against Chile the following January. He tore his left anterior cruciate ligament last January on his first day training with Nuremberg and returned to the field for the Galaxy on July 4.

The U.S. went with an all-Major League Soccer starting lineup; the regulars stayed with their European clubs for matches this weekend. They will report to Miami on Sunday and Monday ahead of the opening game of the final round of World Cup qualifying, at Honduras on Feb. 6.

Tosaint Ricketts and Russell Teibert were the starting forwards for Canada, coming off a 4-0 loss to Denmark in Tucson on Saturday. Dwayne De Rosario, Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault, Kyle Bekker and Terry Dunfield started in midfield and Nik Ledgerwood, Ashtone Morgan, Nana Attakora and Dejan Jakovic were starting on defense.

Simon Thomas started in goal for Canada. Thomas replaced Lars Hirschfeld in the second half of the Denmark game.

Canada, already eliminated from qualifying for next year's World Cup in Brazil, is preparing for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July.

Unusual Weather Hits Most of Country

A fluctuation in the jet stream unusual for mid-winter has created a wild range of weather.

Tornado watches have been issued for parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas, and April-like thunderstorms are expected in Chicago.

Other states from Texas to Florida, Kansas and parts of the Midwest and Northeast are experiencing record heat. Record warmth is expected today ahead of the storms, with record highs possible in Chicago, St. Louis and Tampa that could reach 60 degrees or more, 73 degrees and 83 degrees, respectively.

Additionally, a powerful cold front will slam into the mid-Mississippi Valley today, producing tornadoes and gusty winds near 80 mph. The biggest chance for tornadoes is from Little Rock, Ark., to Memphis, Tenn., but the entire area from Dallas to Houston, New Orleans, Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis could see tornadoes and damaging winds.

The storms will also create flooding from the Midwest to the Northeast, with some areas getting as much as three inches of rain.

The unusual weather will linger through this evening. Areas most at risk for tornadoes include southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, northern Louisiana, Mississippi, southeast Oklahoma, western Tennessee and northeast Texas, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center.

Behind the flooding rain and record warmth, cold air is expected to move in this week.

Already in the West, 18 states from Michigan to New Mexico and up to Washington have winter weather warnings and advisories. Blizzard-like conditions might develop on Thursday for places including Des Moines, Iowa; Rochester, Minn.; Eau Clair, Wis., and Green Bay, Wis. These areas will see as much as eight inches of snow, with gusty winds near 35 to 45 mph. The combination could create white-out conditions.

The weather will shift dramatically in Chicago by Thursday, dropping from the record high of more than 60 degrees today to 17. Sub-zero wind chill temperatures are likely for most of the Midwest.

Along the East Coast, warm air is moving in. Highs will approach 50 degrees today in New York City, with a high of 60 possible Wednesday. Washington, D.C., will approach the mid- to upper-60s Wednesday.

The cold air will finally arrive in the Northeast and the East Coast by Friday, blasting the areas with frigid temperatures for the weekend, sweeping in from D.C. to Boston.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama kept up pressure on Congress Monday to pass tough new gun legislation, seeking help from law enforcement leaders in three communities that have suffered the horrors of mass shootings.

At a White House meeting, Obama said that no group is more important in the gun debate and he said he recognizes the issue "elicits a lot of passion all across the country." But Obama also said he believes Congress will respond to appeals from police.

"Hopefully if law enforcement officials who are dealing with this stuff every single day can come to some basic consensus in terms of steps that we need to take," he said, "Congress is going to be paying attention to them, and we'll be able to make progress."

The president's meeting comes as he tries to build support for gun control legislation that will be difficult to get through Congress. He urged Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, limit high capacity magazines and require universal background checks.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina has indicated he will be using the power of the president's still intact political organization to mobilize support for the legislation. Messina traveled to New York City last week to meet with aides to Mayor Michael Bloomberg at City Hall, according to a person familiar with the discussion, speaking on a condition of anonymity since the meeting was private. Bloomberg has tightened gun laws in the city and founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition that now has more than 800 mayors pushing for national legislation.

Obama met in the Roosevelt Room with the heads of the Major Cities Chiefs Association and the Major County Sheriffs Association, members of his Cabinet and chiefs that responded to the worst shootings of 2012. That includes Aurora, Colo., where 12 were killed in July; Oak Creek, Wis., where six died in a Sikh temple assault: and Newtown, Conn., scene of the most recent mass tragedy that left 20 first-graders dead.

Obama also said that Washington needs to take mental health issues and school safety more seriously and should help law enforcement agencies hire more police, make sure they get the training they need and give rural forces the resources they need to deal with emergencies.

"Many of them also recognize that it's not only the high profile mass shootings that are of concern here," the president said. "It's also what happens on a day in day out basis in places like Chicago or Philadelphia where young people are victims of gun violence every single day."

Right-to-work, 'fair share' bills surface in Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- A pair of labor bills in Maine that have been rejected in past legislative sessions, so-called right-to-work and fair share, are being introduced again this session.

Republican Rep. Lawrence Lockman of Amherst acknowledges that his bills will face an uphill battle in a Legislature, with Democratic majorities in both chambers. But he also notes that other states ? notably Indiana and Michigan ? last year passed right-to-work laws.

In Maine, Lockman's bill would allow workers at unionized private businesses to opt not to join or financially support a union as a condition of employment. Lockman says it's good for jobs and good for business.

The second bill takes away a requirement that state employees pay fees to the Maine State Employees Association whether they join the union or not.

Barge hits Miss. River bridge; Oil cleanup ongoing

(AP) ? Cleanup crews with booms skimmed oily water from the Mississippi River a day after a barge with more than 80,000 gallons of oil struck a railroad bridge near Vicksburg, spreading a sheen of light crude that kept part of the waterway shut to ship traffic Monday, authorities said.

It remained unclear Monday morning how much oil had leaked into the river, according to the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers.

The spill backed up at least 24 tugboats, barges and other vessels on the normally bustling corridor, said Kavanaugh Breazeale, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg. The river was closed to traffic for 16 miles ? eight miles north and eight miles south of Vicksburg.

Breazeale said the damaged barge had eight tanks and each tank could hold 80,000 gallons of oil. He said the investigation had shown that one tank was pierced above the water line.

"It's not leaking that much oil," Breazeale said, though the exact amount was not known.

He also said it was uncertain how long the river would remain closed.

Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Lally said crews are working on skimming oil that is contained in the boom and that he, too, was unsure much oil had leaked.

Tugs were holding the barge near shore on the Louisiana side of the river, south of the bridge it hit and directly across from Vicksburg's Riverwalk Casino.

Orange containment boom was stretched across part of the river downstream from the barge, and a small boat appeared to patrol the area.

Twelve northbound vessels and 12 southbound vessels were waiting to pass Monday, according to Breazeale.

Herman Smith, superintendent of the Vicksburg Bridge Commission of Warren County, said the railroad bridge gets hit about once or twice a year, usually during floods. During the 2011 flood, it was hit five times in two weeks.

The river isn't in flood stage now, Smith said. It was 33.5 feet Sunday.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Ryan Gomez said investigators reported that a towboat or tug was pushing two tank barges when the collision occurred about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

The second barge was damaged, Gomez said, and authorities inspected and cleared the railroad bridge afterward.

The oily sheen was reported up to three miles downriver from the bridge at Vicksburg on Sunday.

Gomez said crews have laid down a boom and also a secondary boom. They also were using a rotating skimmer device to sweep up oily water in the river.

"They have the boom to contain any crude oil that's leaking out of the barge. They have a secondary boom to corral any crude oil that gets past the first boom," he said.

He said crews also were in the process of working to transfer the remaining oil.

"They are continuing to try to remove the product from the damaged tank to one of the non-damaged tanks on the same barge," he added. "The ultimate goal is to transfer all of the crude to a different barge."

He said the barge was southbound at the time of the collision, but investigators were still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

The oil sheen was unlikely to pose a threat to the Gulf of Mexico, more than 340 river miles south of Vicksburg.

But it appeared to be coming from one or two tanks located at the stern of the first barge, Gomez had said previously. He said that there was no indication that any oil was leaking from the second barge and that it was still unclear whether the second barge also hit the bridge or was damaged through a collision with the first.

United States Environmental Services, a response-and-remediation company, was working to contain the oil with booms before collecting it, Gomez said.

Railroad traffic was allowed to continue after the bridge was found safe for trains, Petty Officer Carlos Vega said Sunday.

The barges are owned by Third Coast Towing LLC, Gomez said. According to a website listed under that name, the company is located in Corpus Christi, Texas. A woman who answered the phone Monday at Third Coast Towing LLC declined to comment.

Both vessels were being pushed by the tugboat Nature's Way Endeavor. The website for Nature's Way Marine LLC of Theodore, Ala., identifies the vessel as a 3,000-horsepower, 90-foot-long boat. It was built in 1974 and underwent a complete rebuild in 2011, according to the company.

A company manager referred calls to the Coast Guard command center at Vicksburg.

The last time an oil spill closed a portion of the lower Mississippi River, it was for less than a day last February after an oil barge and a construction barge collided, spilling less than 10,000 gallons of oil. In 2008, a fuel barge collided with a tanker and broke in half, dumping 283,000 gallons of heavy crude into the waterway and closing the river for six days.

When barges it the Vicksburg bridges, a sharp bend in the river is sometimes blamed. In March 2012, barges carrying grain broke loose and hit the old U.S. 80 bridge. A barge scraped the bridge in July 2011.

On March 23, 2011, several barges broke loose and some hit the U.S. 80 bridge and Interstate 20 bridge. One was hung up on the I-20 bridge for about three weeks before it was removed.

Venezuela transfers inmates from prison after riot kills 58

URIBANA, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan authorities transferred inmates out of a prison on Sunday following a bloody riot two days earlier that killed 58 people and again highlighted chaos in the country's jails.

It was the fourth high-profile incident in 18 months in a penal system that has experienced repeated fatal clashes and shootouts. Venezuela's prisons house three times the number of inmates they were designed to hold.

The violence broke out at the Uribana jail as cancer-stricken President Hugo Chavez continues receiving treatment in Cuba and Vice President Nicolas Maduro - the notional head of state - visited him in Havana then flew to a summit in Chile.

In surprisingly candid comments to state TV, Prisons Minister Iris Varela acknowledged that weapons-smuggling enabled by corrupt prison workers had let armed gangs effectively control the run-down facility, near the city of Barquisimeto in southwestern Venezuela.

"It was nearly impossible to operate a penitentiary here given the level of violence," Varela told a news conference. "This is part of the corruption of some officials. We have opened battle lines against them."

Varela said 2,000 male prisoners and 130 female prisoners were being transferred to other facilities, while 46 remained in hospital recovering from injuries.

The government did not provide its own official number of 58 dead until late on Sunday afternoon. A hospital official had earlier put the death toll at 61.

Television images showed the burnt remains of cells that had been burned by prisoners. Makeshift shacks with teetering roofs and exposed electrical wiring, built by inmates in the overcrowded prison, lay charred by the blaze.

Prisoners had been raising goats and chickens inside the grounds, Varela said, and had an extensive network of tunnels for escape and trafficking.

She said the inmate gangs had probably wanted to stay, most likely because of the ample opportunity for lucrative illicit business within the jail.

"The prisoners didn't escape from here en masse because they didn't want to," she said. "If all the men that were in here pushed the wall, they would have knocked it over."

INSPECTION TRIGGERED RIOT

On Friday, the authorities had attempted to carry out an inspection at Uribana targeting the gangs' weapons, but were unable to do so because of armed resistance, the minister said.

Searching through the wreckage on Sunday, officers found a hand grenade and the charred remains of an unidentified body, which was included in the official toll.

Earlier in the day, relatives gathered outside voiced anger at the lack of information about where inmates were being sent.

"We're suffering here, and the government is saying nothing," said Josefina Ramirez, 36, seeking information about her 25-year-old husband. "We want Chavez to come here to give us news. We want an answer."

Chavez has not been seen in public nor heard from in 45 days, an absence that has spurred criticism from opposition leaders that the country is effectively without a president. Allies insist he is fully carrying out his duties.

Maduro promised a full investigation of the incident just after returning to Venezuela from Havana on Saturday. Within hours, he left to meet with Latin American and European dignitaries at a summit in Chile.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff scrapped her agenda at that summit and returned home after a nightclub fire killed at least 233 people early on Sunday.

Varela had earlier blamed opposition media for reporting the search, which she said triggered the violence. Prisons have been a growing headache for the Chavez administration.

Inmates refusing to be transferred out of a Caracas prison battled security forces in May for days as smoke rose above the compound and shots rang out. Chavez later said he called from Cuba, where he was receiving treatment, and spoke with one of the inmates to help negotiate an end to the standoff.

Local media last year published a story about a nightclub called Disco Tokio that held a Mother's Day party that featured musical groups flown in from Colombia and Puerto Rico. The club was located inside the Tocoron jail.

Witch-hunting "Hansel & Gretel" wins box office

(Reuters) - A grown-up "Hansel & Gretel" grabbed the weekend box office title, pulling in $19 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales with its reinvention of the classic fairy tale characters as fierce bounty hunters.

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" knocked last weekend's winner, low-budget horror flick "Mama," into second place. "Mama" earned $12.8 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates, followed by "Silver Linings Playbook" with $10 million.

CIA drama "Zero Dark Thirty" came in fourth with $9.8 million.

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star in "Hansel & Gretel" as crossbow-wielding adult siblings who travel the world to take out evil witches. MGM and Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures produced the action comedy for about $50 million. Paramount had predicted opening weekend sales in the high-teens or low $20 million range.

Don Harris, Paramount's president of distribution, said the film performed well despite the very cold temperatures and snow that hit the eastern United States.

"We are pleased that we were on our number on a worldwide basis. It looks like we are on or exceeding our numbers, but we did get dinged with the weather on Friday," he said in an interview.

"The impact of the weather was certainly more than I had predicted."

"Mama" features Jessica Chastain as a woman forced to take care of two orphaned nieces who have been living in the woods. The $15 million production has now earned $48.6 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters through two weekends.

Chastain also stars in "Zero Dark Thirty" in an Oscar-nominated role as a dogged CIA agent searching for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The best picture nominee, which has sparked debate over depictions of torture, has grossed $69.9 million since its release in late December.

"Silver Linings Playbook," another Oscar contender, stars Bradley Cooper as a former mental patient trying to rebuild his life with the help of a young widow played by Jennifer Lawrence. Total sales for "Silver Linings" reached $69.46 million.

New crime thriller "Parker" finished in fifth place, taking in $7 million at domestic theaters. The film is based on a series of novels by Donald E. Westlake and stars Jason Statham as a thief seeking revenge against a crew that double-crossed him. Jennifer Lopez plays a woman who helps with his mission.

"Movie 43," a raunchy new comedy with an ensemble of Hollywood directors and stars, settled for seventh place. The film is a series of related short films about three kids scouring the Internet to find the world's most-banned movie. Stars making appearances include Huge Jackman, Seth MacFarlane, Kate Winslet and Dennis Quaid. Privately held Relativity Media produced the film for about $6 million.

"Mama" was distributed by Universal Studios, a division of Comcast Corp. Sony Corp's movie studio released "Zero Dark Thirty." "Parker" was released by independent studio FilmDistrict. The Weinstein Co distributed "Silver Linings Playbook."

Unpopular Dog Names: Monikers For Pets That Are No Longer Cool

From Vetstreet's Kristen Seymour:

Just as today?s second-grade classrooms are no longer filled to the brim with Jennifers and Jasons, the dog names that were most popular a decade or two ago are no longer at the head of the class.

After checking out the most popular and trendiest puppy names, we decided to try something different and determine which names are on the other end of current trends. Using Vetstreet?s data on close to 1.26 million dogs, we took a peek at which names have fallen in popularity since 2003. Here are the 10 male and 10 female dog names that have fallen the farthest in the past decade.

List and captions courtesy of Vetstreet

  • #10 Sammy (Male) / Shadow (Female)

Sammy was the No. 24 most popular male dog name a decade ago and fell to No. 66 last year. It?s worth noting that Sam is also losing popularity, falling from No. 14 to No. 35 over the same period of time. Shadow, which came in as the No. 51 most popular female dog name in 2003, has now fallen to No. 87.

  • #9 Smokey (Male) / Madison (Female)

Smokey hasn?t fallen out of the top 100, but after going from No. 43 to No. 87 over the last decade, it still earned a spot on this list. Madison, the No. 62 female dog name in 2003, dropped out of the top 100 in 2009. Its nickname, Maddie, has also lost popularity but at a slower pace.

  • #8 Luke (Male) / Sheba (Female)

Although Luke was the No. 56 most popular name for male dogs in 2003, it fell out of the top 100 in 2012. Sheba, a name that fell off the list of most popular female dog names in 2009, came in at No. 61 back in 2003.

  • #7 Scooby (Male) / Casey (Female)

Scooby (Dooby Doo), where are you? Not in the top 100 anymore. After coming in at No. 53 in 2003, the name of one of pop culture?s favorite pups fell out of the top 100 in 2008. Casey, which was the No. 58 most popular female name a decade ago, also fell off the most popular names list in 2008.

  • #6 Rusty (Male) / Heidi (Female)

Rusty had a home on the list of 20 most popular names a decade ago, coming in at No. 16, but last year it dropped to No. 63. Heidi is still in the top 100 most popular female dog names ? but only just, coming in at No. 92 after holding the No. 50 spot in 2003.

  • #5 Joey (Male) / Lucky (Female)

Joey, the No. 52 most popular male dog name in 2003, fell out of the top 100 in 2012, earning it the No. 5 spot on this list. Lucky was the No. 56 most popular female dog name in 2003 but dropped off the list in 2010.

  • #4 Spike (Male) / Katie (Female)

Spike has fallen drastically in popularity in the past decade, going from No. 29 in 2003 to No. 81 in 2012. Katie saw a similar drop, beginning at No. 33 a decade ago, then falling to No. 82 last year.

  • #3 Rudy (Male) / Misty (Female)

Rudy was in the top half of most popular names in 2003, coming in at No. 47, but fell out of the top 100 last year. After holding the No. 48 spot in 2003, Misty dropped off the 100 most popular names list in 2011.

  • #2 Dakota (Male) / Holly (Female)

Dakota, the No. 43 most popular male dog name in 2003, comes in second on our list after dropping out of the top 100 in 2009. Holly, the second least trendy female dog name, has a similar story, claiming No. 45 in 2003 and falling off the list of most popular names in 2012.

  • #1 Scooter (Male) / Brandy (Female)

Scooter earned the top spot on this list by declining the most in popularity over the past decade, falling from No. 34 on the list of most popular male dog names in 2003 to No. 98 in 2012. Brandy takes No. 1 for females on the least popular list, starting at No. 42 in 2003 and falling out of the top 100 in 2011.

Blackhawks tie franchise-best start with 3-2 win

(AP) ? This was supposed to be the weekend for the NHL All-Star Game at Nationwide Arena.

Instead, the Chicago Blackhawks flaunted their own constellation of stars.

Patrick Kane had yet another multipoint game with two assists, Jonathan Toews scored the game-winner early in the third period and Corey Crawford had 24 saves to help Chicago match the best start in franchise history with a 3-2 victory Saturday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The only other time the Blackhawks began a season 5-0-0 was 1971-72.

"That was one of those games where maybe we didn't play our best hockey like we've seen in the last five games, but as a team it doesn't matter who goes out there you've got to find a way to win," Toews said. "And we did that."

Crawford, who won for the fourth time this season, was solid all night but particularly when the Blackhawks were a man down. They killed all five penalties.

"I feel good, I feel focused," Crawford said. "The puck looks pretty big right now. Also, everyone's making the effort to play defense. It's showing in the first bunch of games ? guys are coming back to help out and that helps us get to offense after that."

Badly outplayed at the outset, the Blackhawks played methodical, poised and unhurried hockey all night. Even when down 1-0, it seemed only a matter of time before they collected themselves and took control.

"Finding ways to win is important," coach Joel Quenneville said. "You're not going to be great every night or your best every night. Columbus played a hard-working game, working harder than us tonight. But we got key saves from (Crawford) tonight and that helped us."

The All-Star Game, of course, was cancelled by the 119-day lockout that reduced the season to 48 games for each team over 99 days.

Steve Mason held his own with 21 saves for the Blue Jackets, who lost their third in a row. A goal by Derick Brassard was waved off in the second period when the officials ruled Nick Foligno interfered with Crawford. That decision caused a sellout crowd of 18,381 to boo throughout the game.

"You never know how a game's going to end up," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said. "(The goal being disallowed) certainly changed the course of the game. At the time, we were down 2-1. It's a huge play. He (referee Dan O'Rourke) makes the call, he saw what he saw. There's nothing we can do once he makes the call."

On the power play after Jamal Mayers went to the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct, Brassard's slap shot from the point beat Crawford. But O'Rourke immediately waved off the goal. Replays showed Foligno's right skate was in the crease, although there was no apparent contact between him and Crawford.

Between periods, Foligno said O'Rourke told him that the goal was disallowed because "I had bumped (Crawford) and didn't give him time to reset."

The crowd booed lustily at every opportunity the rest of the night.

Quenneville said later that replays showed clearly that it should have been a tying goal.

Mark Letestu gave Columbus a 1-0 lead and Artem Anisimov scored late to make it interesting for the Blue Jackets, who have been outscored 12-3 in their losing skid.

Toews, off of Kane's second assist of the night, put the Blackhawks up two goals 6:35 into the third after a turnover in the Chicago zone. Letestu's pass was deflected by Marian Hossa with Kane retrieving it. He fired a blind, quick pass to Toews who was all alone behind the defense. Toews faked left, then right, before flipping the puck past Mason for his third of the year and a 3-1 lead.

Anisimov backhanded in Brandon Dubinsky's wraparound attempt with 2:19 left in regulation, but the Blue Jackets could not get the equalizer.

Kane now has more than one point in four of the five Chicago games and has two goals and seven assists.

"You can tell he's good ol' Kaner," Toews said. "He's going to work hard and make plays."

The Blue Jackets could only think about the goal that didn't count.

"Overall everybody worked hard," Mason said. "It's unfortunate. I'm not sure what the call was on that second goal for us but the guys kept working and we just came up a little short."

NOTES: Chicago won all six meetings against the Blue Jackets last season and is now 20-12-4 all-time at Nationwide Arena. ... The Blackhawks improved to 4-0-0 on the road this season. ... The Blue Jackets were without RW Cam Atkinson, who suffered a lower-body injury in camp. He may be out at least a week. ... Hossa has 35 points (17 goals, 18 assists) in 29 career games against Columbus while Kane has 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) and Toews 33 (14 goals, 20 assists) in 31 games against the Blue Jackets.

Sandy refugees scramble for housing Saturday night

By Brian Thompson, NBCNewYork.com

About a hundred homeless Sandy refugees in New Jersey were left without a place to stay for several hours on Saturday as a FEMA housing program appeared to run out on them.

At one point, they were being told to shelter at a church in Brick Township where volunteers were trying to find replacement accommodations for them.

NBC New York has learned that when Gov. Chris Christie learned of the situation, he ordered his Department of Community Affairs to work with FEMA to place them in alternate motel rooms.

"We're not going to let people be out on the street," said DCA Commissioner Richard Constable.

For more visit NBCNewYork.com

At the last minute the night before(on Friday night), a FEMA spokesman said a two week extension to the Transitional Shelter Assistance program had been granted, but that some of the 1500 or so families still sheltering in motels probably would not be notified until Saturday morning, just before they would have been forced to check out.

The hundred or so who ended up losing their motel rooms never got word Saturday morning they could have stayed, according to Constable, and that's when the state jumped in.

FEMA leaves many Sandy victims languishing

Working with FEMA, the families were finally contacted by late Saturday afternoon or early evening, and all were placed in new motel rooms, where they can stay for the next two weeks, which is the duration of the program's extension.

"All families who were displaced were relocated by Saturday night," Constable said.??

Rare 1794 silver dollar auctioned for record $10M

6 hrs.

A 1794 silver dollar, which many experts believe was the first such coin struck by the U.S. Mint, sold for a record $10 million at auction on Thursday.?

The Flowing Hair Silver Dollar more than doubled the previous $4.1 million auction?record for a coin set in 1999, auction house Stack's Bowers Galleries said.?

Legend Numismatics, a rare-coin firm based in New Jersey, bought the coin, which was the highlight of the evening sale in New York that fetched a total of $17.2 million.?

"We felt in our heart that this would be the very first coin to exceed the $10 million barrier in auction and were in fact prepared to bid much high in order to acquire this unique piece of history," the company said in a statement, adding it had no plans to sell the coin in the near future.?

David Bowers, chairman emeritus of Stack's Bowers Galleries, said the coin has unique features that make it particularly valuable.?

"It is the first American metal dollar struck and the finest known. You have these combinations coming together. No museum has an equal piece," he told Reuters.?

The coin was part of the Cardinal Collection, amassed by the collector Martin Logies. Bowers described the collection as the "Old Masters" of coins struck during the earliest years of the U.S. Mint.?

"I think it is extraordinary and I am very pleased that the first silver dollar is the first to top the $10 million threshold," said Logies, who purchased the coin three years ago.?

The $10 million price includes the buyer's commission.?

Like the buoyant art market, which is expecting another good year in 2013, Bowers said coins are a good investment, have a worldwide market and have risen steadily in value.?

"We're continually surprised by surprises," he said, adding there are several million coin collectors around the globe. "They want to collect coins for appreciation, art, rarity and beauty."?

The record-setting coin shows a profile of Miss Liberty facing right surrounded by stars representing each state in the union. The design was only used in 1794 and briefly the following year.?

Another top seller in the sale of 94 lots was the 1792 Half Disme, which dates back to David Rittenhouse, the first director of the U.S. Mint. It fetched $975,000, excluding the 17.5 percent buyer's commission.?

NRA ad attacking Obama 'ill-advised'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - One of the National Rifle Association's senior lobbyists said an ad by the nation's leading gun-rights group after a school shooting in Connecticut that refers to President Barack Obama's children was "ill-advised."

Jim Baker, head of the federal affairs division at the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said he had made his views known to others at the powerful gun-rights organization.

The ad, which cast Obama as hypocritical for having expressed skepticism about putting armed guards in schools, when "his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools," drew widespread criticism when it first became public on January 15.

Nationwide outrage over the shooting of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 moved gun violence and gun control to the center of the U.S. political debate.

"I don't think it was particularly helpful, that ad," Baker told Reuters in a telephone interview. "I thought it ill-advised."

"I think the ad could have made a good point, if it talked about the need for increased school security, without making the point using the president's children," he said. The NRA has advocated putting armed guards in schools

Baker was the NRA's representative at a meeting with Vice President Joseph Biden on January 10 to discuss the administration's plans to reduce gun violence in the wake of the school shooting.

He said he was not involved in creating the ad, and once it appeared, he had let others at the NRA know what he thought. "I got to say my piece," he said.

Baker gave no details of the their response to him, but said, "Believe it or not, there are occasionally differences of opinion in this building."

In the ad, a narrator asks, "Are the president's kids more important than yours?" Obama's daughters, 14-year-old Malia and 11-year-old Sasha, attend private school in Washington and receive Secret Service protection, as is routine for children of presidents.

The White House has called the NRA ad "repugnant and cowardly," while New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said it was "reprehensible" and undermined the NRA's credibility by bringing the president's children into the debate. Christie is considered a possible Republican presidential contender in 2016.

Susan Eisenhower, the daughter of the late President Dwight Eisenhower who had Secret Service protection as a child, wrote in the Washington Post that she was "disgusted" by the ad.

The NRA's president, David Keene, objected to the White House criticism earlier this month, saying "We didn't name the president's daughters ... What we said is that these are people who think that their families deserve protection that yours don't."

The president's critics also have noted that when Obama announced his plan to respond to the gun violence, he was flanked by four children. Obama proposed renewing a U.S. assault weapons ban, as well as banning high-capacity magazines and more stringent background checks for gun purchasers.

Woman battling breast cancer gets big surprise! - WBTV 3 News ...

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Wanda Bryant wasn't sure why she was driving to Charlotte from her Aiken County, South Carolina home.? She only knew her best friend Fonda Bryant (same last name, no relation) told her she'd organized a surprise.? Fonda needed Wanda there.?

So Wanda drove to WBTV Studios in west Charlotte.

When she walked in,?Wanda seemed a little anxious.? Unsure.? Wondering what the heck she was getting into.

Then a woman stepped forward.? She introduced herself as Wendy Bentien, a board member with the local charity "Go Jen Go!".? It's a small non-profit established in honor of Jen Pagani, a young, strong-willed Charlotte mother battling breast cancer.

The same breast cancer as Wanda.

Wendy told Wanda she was here to give her something on behalf of "Go Jen Go!".? Wendy then reached in a bag and pulled out?a thousand dollar check.? She handed it to Wanda.? Wendy told her it was a gift... just enough to pay for?her church missionary trip?to Africa.?

For months, Wanda said she'd been trying to raise the money so she could go.?

"I've been selling boxes of popcorn," she said, "and just putting pennies together because I really, really wanted to go to West Ghana.? It's my lifelong dream of a trip."

Despite Wanda's efforts, she?hadn't yet sold enough popcorn.? The trip is in one month.? Wanda feared she wasn't going to be able to make it.

But with this check from "Go Jen Go!", there's no doubt she can.

"This is the greatest feeling," said Wendy, who got teary-eyed herself at Wanda's emotional reaction.? "This foundation was established because of Jen's heart. It's to help other women going through the same thing.? Jen is the strongest woman I know and she wants others to feel supported through their battles."

How did Wanda and Fonda and Wendy and WBTV all get together to make this surprise work?

All credit must go to Fonda, the best friend.? She got online looking for charities to help fund her friend's trip.? She then contacted Anchor Molly Grantham via her Facebook page.? Add a little bit of magic, some luck and a lot of energy over a 6-day period, and voila!? The group all met Thursday afternoon.

"I just wanted to give her something to help her," Fonda said.? "To make her dream come true.? I can't even put it into words.? I love her. She's been a great friend to me in my tough times, and I wanted to return the happiness."

To get more information on "Go Jen Go!" and to register for the non-profit's first fundraising 5k, go to www.runjenrun5k.com.? The run (you can walk!) will be March 2, 2013 at McAlpine Creek Park.

Millions of smokers could be priced out of health insurance because of tobacco penalties in President Barack Obama?s health care law, say experts.
