CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?FairPoint Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq CM: FRP) continues to improve its operations.

"We're making good operational gains and we are proud of the 8.4 percent gain in broadband subscribers in 2011 ? the highest percentage gain among our industry peers," said FairPoint CEO Paul Sunu.

Earlier this month, FairPoint offered employees, who are members of the Communications Workers of America, an opportunity to take advantage of early retirement incentives. Forty-six employees were accepted for this voluntary retirement program, which takes effect March 30. The company believes this effort will result in expected annualized operating expense savings of approximately $3.8 million, with the full benefit realized in 2013. The company expects to provide severance or incentive payments of approximately $2.3 million.

Additionally, FairPoint is expecting to realize further savings by consolidating operational functions. Thirty-two non-represented employees will be leaving the company as their positions are eliminated. The expected result is annualized operating expense savings of approximately $2.8 million and severance payments of approximately $400,000.?

Climbing My Family Tree: Family Recipe Friday: Home Ec Taught ...

When I was a preteen, I bought this cookbook for Home Ec class (remember that?). The copyright date is 1960.

The cookbook is still on my kitchen bookshelf for nostalgia reasons. After all, I wrote my name and address in it (below). But most of the recipes were too complicated or time-consuming for me, and my mother used mixes anyway, which was fine with her daughters.

The book falls open to a page showing "Penny-Wise Cake" which I remember using as the basis of a pineapple upside down cake we baked in Home Ec class.

Here's the recipe for pineapple upside down cake:

2 cups sifted cake flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla

Also have ready for "topping"--1/4 cup melted butter, 2/3 cup brown sugar, 1 can of sliced pineapple rings (drain but reserve juice).

Preheat oven to 350.

1. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cream shortening thoroughly. Add sugar gradually, and cream together well. Add egg, beat very thoroughly. Add flour alternately with milk, beating after each addition until smooth. Stir in vanilla. Set aside.

2. Combine melted butter and brown sugar. Mix well, spread in 9 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Drain 1 can (8.5 oz) pineapple rings and sprinkle 2 TB of the juice over sugar mixture. Cut drained pineapple rings into quarters, arrange over mixture in pan. Pour cake batter over pineapple and bake at 350 for 45-50 min until done.

3. Cool in pan for 5 min, then invert on plate and let stand for a minute or two before gently removing the baking pan. Serve warm! A little vanilla ice cream wouldn't hurt either. Enjoy.

The dual plots in the maybe-supernatural film 'Intruders' add up to a surprising reveal.

In ?Intruders,? a (maybe) supernatural thriller from director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (?Intacto,? ?28 Weeks Later?), Mia, a 12-year-old English girl (Ella Purnell), finds the faded manuscript of a horror story in a hole way up a tree. The story is about Hollowface, a faceless nocturnal predator, who yearns to steal a child?s face as his own.?

Mia plagiarizes the tale for school, reading it aloud to her enthralled class. There are two reasons this turns out to be a terrible idea. First, as Mia knows, the story stops abruptly, as though unfinished, and now her teacher wants her to write the rest. Secondly, as Mia unfortunately doesn?t know, the act of speaking Hollowface?s name is enough to summon him from ... wherever.?

Soon, she begins to sense that there is someone in her bedroom, hiding within the shadows in her closet; and, before long, he materializes threateningly in the room. Luckily, her father, John (Clive Owen), rushes in and fights the intruder, who escapes out the window.?

John is a construction worker, brave enough to spend all day way up in the skeleton of a skyscraper, so, predictably, he doesn?t want to wait around for the police to find the man.?

But Mia isn?t Hollowface?s only victim. In a rundown apartment in Spain, a little boy (Iz?n Corchero) is being similarly terrorized. His mother (Pilar L?pez de Ayala) consults her priest (Daniel Br?hl), who tries to arrange something like an exorcism.?

As we go back and forth between these two ? with the English plot thread clearly dominant, adding up to at least three quarters of the running time ? many questions nag at us: Who is Hollowface? How can the children be saved? And, most of all, what?s the connection? Why is he after these two particular kids, separated by geography and language??

Fresnadillo?s last feature was the 2007 ?28 Weeks Later? (the sequel to Danny Boyle?s ?28 Days Later...?), which in some ways bested the original. Like any contemporary horror director, Fresnadillo knows all the tricks of audience manipulation ? ?faux? loud noise, shock cuts, brief and ambiguous images in the shadows, dissonant (often misleading) music.?

But there is more than that going on in ?Intruders.? The mystery of the dual plot line is also a trick ? a very cleverly executed one, which baffles the audience by exploiting their ingrained responses to certain cinematic conventions. I didn?t figure it out until moments before the big reveal. It?s a trick ... but not a cheat; a second viewing exposed how many hints had been spread throughout the film. (Your mileage may vary.)?

It would be lovely to give you an example, but it would ruin the experience. This sadly hasn?t stopped some reviewers and online commenters from blithely posting (without spoiler warnings) the equivalent of ?Bruce Willis is dead,? ?Darth Vader is Luke?s father,? and ?It was the name of his sled.? So read cautiously.?

Owen is always at least good, and here he?s perfectly cast. (Actually, he played a similar character stuck in an analogous position in last year?s ?Trust.?) But the most striking performance is from Purnell, who is best known for the younger version of Kiera Knightley?s character in ?Never Let Me Go.? The film relies on a certain kind of ambiguity of expression, which she pulls off perfectly. And her chemistry with Owen is good enough to both imply and deny something less savory in their relationship.?

Amid the nonstop creepiness, Fresnadillo tosses in innumerable references to (or appropriations from) other horror films ? ?Poltergeist,? ?The Exorcist,? ?The Sixth Sense,? ?Candyman,? ?The Grudge? ? the list goes on. The recognition of these connections occasionally threatens to pull us out of the film. The strangest of his injokes, however, is in his choice of names: John?s last name is Farrow, which would make his daughter?s name the same as the star of one of the greatest of all horror films. (The real life Farrow?s father, an underrated Hollywood director, was also named John.) An amusing, but bizarre and gratuitous, joke. Grade: A- (Rated R for terror, horror violence, some sexuality/nudity and language.)

US economy grew 3 percent in final quarter of 2011

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3 percent in the final three months of 2011, the best pace in a year and a half. But that growth has likely slowed in the current quarter.

Businesses have been restocking their shelves more slowly and shipping fewer long-lasting manufactured goods. In addition, Europe's debt crisis and weaker growth in Asia have slowed demand for U.S. exports.

Stronger hiring in the first two months of the year probably hasn't offset those weaknesses. That's because Americans' pay has barely kept pace with inflation even as gas prices have spiked. So consumer spending, which drives about 70 percent of economic activity, probably hasn't increased much from the end of last year.

Most economists expect growth to pick up later this year as further hiring lifts the economy.

The Commerce Department reported no change Thursday in its previous growth estimate for the October-December quarter. The 3 percent annual rate was the strongest since the spring of 2010. Slower growth in exports than previously estimated was offset by stronger business investment.

Still, economists expect growth has probably slowed to 2 percent or less in the current January-March quarter.

A key reason for that is businesses haven't been restocking their shelves as fast as they did at the end of last year. Many had slashed inventories over the summer out of fear that the economy was on the verge of another recession. When that didn't happen, many stepped up restocking. Inventory building was a key driver of growth in the October-December quarter.

Even though businesses are still replenishing their shelves, the pace has likely slowed. That has likely slowed growth this quarter.

Businesses are also investing less in machinery and equipment this year after a tax credit expired at the end of last year. Orders for durable goods plunged in January. Though orders rebounded in February, that increase didn't offset the entire January decline.

And shipments of core capital goods, a gauge of business investment, grew sluggishly in the three months that ended in February, economists said. That's also likely holding back growth this quarter.

One bright spot for the economy is that hiring has picked up. The economy has added an average of 245,000 jobs per month from December through February. The unemployment rate has fallen by nearly a full percentage point since the summer to 8.3 percent, the lowest level in three years.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell to 359,000 last week, its lowest level in four years. That suggests March was another solid month of hiring.

Stronger hiring should lift consumer spending and growth later this year, many economists say. For the fourth quarter, consumer spending expanded at an annual rate of 2.1 percent, led by strong gains in car sales.

Business investment rose at a 5.2 percent annual rate. It was pushed higher by companies rushing to make equipment purchases before investment tax breaks expired at the end of the year. That was nearly double the estimate the government made a month ago.

But this new-found strength was offset by a reduction in the estimate of export growth. U.S. exports grew at an annual rate of 2.7 percent in the fourth quarter, down from an estimate of 4.3 percent a month ago.

Gas prices in the United States continue to rise, with the national average for regular now nearing $4 a gallon.

Americans are understandably frustrated by this. They're also frustrated with President Obama's "handling" of the situation.

A new Reuters poll finds that more than two-thirds of Americans--68%--"disapprove" of the way Obama is dealing with these high prices. Interestingly, a far lower number of Americans actually blame Obama for the high prices. Instead, they blame the oil companies and a combination of factors.

But it's not clear what Americans want Obama to do about high gas prices.

Releasing some oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve might have a limited, temporary effect, but it would also be raiding a store of oil that many Americans think should be reserved for a much more important purpose: Providing a source of emergency fuel if America's international oil supply lines ever get cut off. If Presidents make it a habit of raiding the SPR every time gas prices rise, the SPR won't be "strategic" for anything other than getting Presidents re-elected.

Because oil and gas prices are likely trending upward for an excellent fundamental reason, meanwhile--increasing demand from emerging economies like India and China--the only way to bring them down permanently is to diversify the country's sources of energy and reduce the country's consumption of it.

And President Obama is actually doing that.

U.S. oil production has increased over the last four years, from about 5 million barrels a day to close to 6 million barrels. Natural gas has become so plentiful that prices have crashed. And, in part as a result of high gas prices, Americans are driving less and using less fuel.

So the U.S. is actually making progress toward curing its foreign oil addiction. There's a long way to go, of course, and there's no quick and lasting fix to today's high prices, but we're making progress. And Americans frustrated with that progress should probably lay at least some blame at the feet of the Presidents and Congresses that have ignored the finite oil problem for the past 40 years.

Whether this progress will satisfy angry voters come November is an open question. Americans do tend to vote with their wallets, and gas prices are a highly visible and painful reminder that money doesn't buy much these days. So, as depressing as it is to those who view the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a true emergency hoard, it's no surprise that the Administration is talking about possibly releasing oil from it.

Updated at 8:54 a.m. ET: Qatar-based regional news channel al-Jazeera has pledged not to air footage of the killings carried out in France by an al-Qaida-inspired gunman after President Nicolas Sarkozy pleaded with broadcasters not to show the disturbing scenes.

France is still coming to terms with Mohamed Merah's close-range shootings of three Jewish children, a rabbi and three soldiers in the south of the country.

The killings were filmed by Merah using a camera attached to his body, BBC News reported.

"I call on executives of all TV stations that may have the images in their possession not to broadcast them under any pretext out of respect for the victims and for France," Sarkozy said following a meeting with police chiefs in Paris.

Al Jazeera, which received a memory stick containing the footage, later announced it would not broadcast the video because it "did not add any information that was not already in public domain" and also "did not meet the television station's code of ethics for broadcast."

Sarkozy: Some Muslim clerics 'not welcome on French soil'

The package sent to al-Jazeera was dated Wednesday, March 21 - the day that police surrounded Merah in his apartment in the city of Toulouse after a massive manhunt, according to a report in the Parisien daily newspaper.

French special forces shot the young Islamist the following day after a 30-hour siege.

"Investigators are trying to find out whether the letter was posted Tuesday night by Mohamed Merah himself or by an accomplice Wednesday morning," the newspaper wrote.

The Paris prosecutor in charge of the case said last week that the Merah had filmed each of the shootings.

The killings, and subsequent calls for tougher measures to monitor Islamic extremism, come a month before the French presidential election.

The PlanOn SlimScan SS100 ($139.99 direct) is nothing if not physically attractive. Unfortunately, the software side of the package doesn't work as well as the hardware, relegating the SlimScan more to the status of an impressive toy than a useful scanner?for now at least.

PlanOn has introduced a variety of surprisingly small, highly useful products, including the PlanOn PrintStik PS910 ($269 street, 2.5 stars) printer and the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369.99 direct, 3.5 stars) scanner, with additional, similar, models of each also available. What all of them, including the SlimScan, have in common is an emphasis on small size. The DocuPen scanner, for example is about the size of a baton or magic wand.

The SlimScan is essentially a smaller version of the DocuPen scan element in a case that's about the size and shape of a stack of four credit cards. In both cases, the scan element is along one of the long edges of the scanner, along with rollers. To scan, you start at the top of the page, business card, or receipt, then roll smoothly down in one sweep.

What in large part makes the DocuPen scanner so attractive is the combination of small size and the ability to scan an entire page in one sweep with little to no learning curve for getting a good scan. What works nicely for scanning a page with the DocuPen, however, doesn't work anywhere near as well for scanning a business card with the SlimScan.

Scanning
You can get a feel for the problem with scanning by using a credit card as a stand in for the scanner. Put a business card flat on a desk. Then hold a credit card with one long edge along one short side of the business card about 5 to 10 degrees off the perpendicular, and sweep the credit card across the business card.

If you try this without holding the card down, sweeping across will tend to move the card. If you hold the card down with your fingers, they'll get in the way of sweeping across the entire card. One solution is to tape the card down to hold it in place, but that's an inelegant workaround at best. A potentially better choice is to put the card in the kind of plastic sleeve that some sheet-fed scanners come with to protect photos, but PlanOn doesn't supply a protective sleeve. The company says it's considering adding one, though.

Not so incidentally, receipts don't generally have the same problem. There's usually more white space around the text than with a business card, leaving plenty of room for you to hold the receipt down without interfering with the scan.

Recognizing Text
Unfortunately, there are other problems beyond the simple mechanics of scanning. After a couple of dozen attempts?more of a learning curve than I'd like?I was able to get decent scans, at least to the extent of my being able to read the text on screen. However, the SlimScan?s program for managing receipts and business cards utterly failed to read any of the text correctly, much less parse it into the right fields.

The results were so poor that I contacted PlanOn to find out if I was doing something wrong. Part of the problem, it turns out, is that you have to scan at a surprisingly slow speed to get good enough scan quality: 1 second per centimeter, or 2.5 seconds per inch?a critical piece of information that isn't mentioned in the scanning instructions, but is hidden instead in an appendix in a PDF file stored in the scanner's memory. PlanOn says it's aware of this oversight and intends to correct it with the next printing of the quick start instructions.

Armed with this information, I rescanned a selection of cards at the slower pace. Indeed, the recognition improved, with at least one or two fields on each card getting filled in properly. Unfortunately, the accuracy still wasn't enough to save any time over simply typing the information into Outlook.

To eliminate scan quality from the equation, I asked the PlanOn representative to send me some scans to import into the program, and then compared my results with his. Even with his scans, I didn't see any obvious improvement. I also didn't see the same level of accuracy that he was reporting. It turned out that he had a later version of the program, which might well make the difference. Even with the accuracy he said he saw, however, it's clear that the program isn't a match for, say, the latest version of NewSoft Presto! BizCard when it comes to recognizing text and putting it in the right fields.

Other Issues
With the SlimScan doing so poorly on the two central tasks for a self-proclaimed receipt and business card scanner, it almost doesn't matter what else it does well or badly. However, there are several other issues that demand mention.

The scanner itself doesn't seem to be fragile, but the protective cover for the scan element is. The cover includes spring loaded plastic clips that can break easily, as I discovered roughly 90 minutes into the scanner's lifetime. PlanOn says it's aware of this issue and is looking at alternatives to the cover as it currently ships. On a strongly positive note, the company says that if it settles on a better solution, it will make it available at minimal cost to anyone who already owns the scanner.

Another issue is that the setup and calibration instructions aren't quite right. I was able to muddle through the installation, but for calibration, I had to call PlanOn to get the right steps. As with the oversight in the instructions about scan speed that I've already mentioned, PlanOn says it will address these issues in the next iteration of the instructions.

Ultimately, the PlanOn SlimScan as I received it is simply not ready for release into the wild. A lot of the issues I saw grow from poor documentation, which can be fixed easily enough, and which PlanOn says it will indeed take care of. But even after those issues are fixed, the OCR accuracy in the software version I received for testing was short of the level it needs to be to make the SlimScan truly useful, and the program itself is cumbersome to use. For the moment, the SlimScan is on a par with the wonderful dancing bear, where the wonder is not in how well the bear dances, but that it dances at all. I look forward to seeing a later iteration of the software, with the hope that PlanOn can turn this bear into a much more graceful dancer.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2012) ? Researchers from Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah report they have discovered a method to identify cancer-causing rearrangements of genetic material called chromosomal translocations quickly, accurately, and inexpensively. A description of the method and the research results appear online in this month's issue of the EMBO Molecular Medicine journal.

Many cancers result from chromosomal translocations in tumor cells. Hundreds of cancer-causing translocations have been discovered, but current methods for detecting them have significant shortcomings.

The technique, developed in the lab of Stephen Lessnick, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Children's Cancer Research at HCI, combines microarray technology, which can look for thousands of translocations in a single test, with a novel antibody that is used to detect the presence of the translocation . "We're moving past the age when a pathologist looking through the microscope at a tumor sample is the best way to diagnose what type of cancer it is," said Lessnick. "The molecular tests currently available are slow, inefficient, and expensive, and one of the biggest issues is that you need high-quality tumor samples, not always available in the clinical setting, to do them." According to Lessnick, his method tolerates real-life specimens much better than the current standard techniques.

"Originally, this method was used in HCI's Cairns lab (headed by Bradley R. Cairns, Ph.D.) to study RNA in yeast. We took their method and applied it to our study of chromosomal translocations in human tissue," Lessnick said. He said the next task is to find a commercial partner to develop this research from a 'proof of principle' into a diagnostic test that doctors can use to help their patients.

"With this method, there's potential to develop a single array that could test for every known cancer-causing translocation simultaneously. Currently, a clinician has to decide beforehand which specific cancer to test," he said.

The research used Ewing's sarcoma (a rare childhood cancer) as the case study for developing the method, but Lessnick maintains that the technology can be easily applied to any type of cancer caused by a translocation.

Funding for this project came from the National Institutes of Health's Innovative Molecular Analysis Technology program. The program focuses on rapid movement of new ideas from basic science labs (such as the Cairns lab) out into the clinical realm. "They were willing to fund this idea without a lot of preliminary data because it showed good potential to move toward clinical uses," said Lessnick.

Lessnick is a Jon and Karen Huntsman Presidential Professor in Cancer Research, and a professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Utah. Other HCI investigators participating in the research include Bradley R. Cairns, Ph.D., HCI Senior Director of Basic Science, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and professor in the Department of Oncological Sciences at the University of Utah, as well as Brett Milash, Ph.D., and Brian Dalley, Ph.D., of the Microarray and Genomic Analysis Core Facility.

NCR and Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta Team Up for 10th Annual NCR Sprint for Cancer Event

Employee-driven 5K, 10K and Fun Run through Dunwoody to benefit pediatric cancer research

Runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts can shape up for spring and support a great cause on Saturday, April 21 as they step off for the 10th annual NCR Sprint for Cancer, a 5K, 10K, Fun Run and Peachtree Road Race pre-qualifier. Celebrating the 10 year anniversary, this annual employee-driven event has set a fundraising goal to surpass more than $1 million in total contributions company-wide across 10 years of giving.? All proceeds from the NCR Sprint for Cancer Atlanta race will benefit pediatric cancer research at the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Scheduled to kick off at 8 am on April 21 in the Perimeter Place Shopping Center located at 100 Perimeter Place (Target parking lot) in Dunwoody, the family-friendly NCR Sprint for Cancer is open to all ages and athletic ability and includes a post-race fair and free activities for children. All registered participants will receive a technical, moisture-wicking T-shirt and goody bag with coupons and samples from race sponsors. The 10K race is a Peachtree Road Race pre-qualifier.

?We are thrilled to come together as an organization to rally around such an important cause as pediatric cancer research,? said Christian Nahas, vice president for NCR Retail and executive sponsor of this year?s NCR Sprint for Cancer. ?This event is such a great opportunity for our employees to join together with the community and demonstrate our commitment to giving back to those who need it most.??

The annual NCR Sprint for Cancer launched in 2003 when employees came together with the goal of creating a charitable event that the entire company could rally around in support of cancer patients and research. The first race took place in the parking lot of the company?s headquarters.? Today, more than 2,200 runners, walkers and volunteers are expected to participate in the 10th annual NCR Sprint for Cancer in multiple cities on April 21 in Atlanta and Dallas/Ft. Worth and May 6, 2012 in Orange County, CA. Proceeds from the Atlanta race will directly benefit Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta.? Since its? inception, the event has collectively raised more than $800,000 for cancer research.?

Individual registration for the 5K or 10K is $20 through April 18, 2012 and $25 starting April 19.
