No darkness at all

A Christian Science perspective.

By The editors of the Christian Science Sentinel / August 30, 2012

A leading point that Christian Science sets forth for the world is the fact there is not a presence or force that exists besides God. All that genuinely is in existence is God and God?s action, or outcome. ?Know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else,? says the Bible (Isaiah 45:6).

Darkness isn?t a substance or element in addition to light; it?s always simply the absence of light. In any room, there aren?t two switches on the wall ? a light switch and also a ?dark? switch. We can?t walk into a bright room with sunshine streaming through the windows and then switch on the dark!

Could it be said that evil, like darkness, has no tangible substance? Whether it appears as selfishness, hatred, illness, injustice, sin, or injury, it actually is a belief in God?s absence ? a false mental impression of God?s nonexistence. The divine Truth and Love that is God is inextinguishable; uncontested. Truth illuminates human consciousness, effectively freeing us from a false belief in the darkness of evil. ?Truth and Love enlighten the understanding, in whose ?light shall we see light;? and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn away from a false material sense,? explains the Monitor?s founder, Mary Baker Eddy (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 510).

We don?t need to switch on the light of spiritual reality; in prayer, we mentally open up to it. The Bible states simply, ?God is light, and in him is no darkness at all? (I John 1:5). That?s right: No darkness at all! And God is ever present, all there is.

The sun shines from one direction because it is in a single place. God, however, shines from every direction at the same time. God isn?t localized; Truth and Love are everywhere. God shines with intelligence from every location and from every viewpoint and direction. The darkness we call fear, ignorance, or hate, then couldn?t ever have any place in the light of God. With joy, we walk in this serene light and are conscious of its glow in our thoughts throughout the big and little moments of our day.

The illuminating power of divine Truth is always here, not to convert things from bad to good, but simply to reveal what is real. That?s what light does ? it merely makes known what is already happening, what is present and true. And what is true and real is God. What is real is God?s magnificent creation and expression. That which is unreal needs no repair or conversion. What the light of divine Truth reveals to you each moment is the harmony of heaven, here and now, including your intact existence in it as a child of God.

No one is excluded from the benefit of this all-present, inextinguishable light. It is shining unimpeded in every corner of the universe and in every corner of thought. It reaches human consciousness to illumine the way even amid what seems the blackest darkness. You are naturally receptive to the light. It is always there for you, without variation. In fact, the Bible joyfully speaks about God as ?the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning? (James 1:17).

This light, this beautiful intelligence of Love, is spiritual and is reflected by you and everyone. We don?t ever have to switch off the dark. The light of God is the only thing present, and it?s all that ever will be present. Even in those specific locations or circumstances that would give you the impression of being inhabited by the most insidious evil, all that is present is the authority of God, gleaming radiantly and surely. All is the connected wholeness of ?the Father of lights? and His manifestation.

Golf: Quesne climbs to European Masters lead in Swiss Alps

CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland: A dream round featuring seven birdies and an eagle lifted France's Julien Quesne to the top of the leaderboard at the midway point of the European Masters on Friday.

Quesne's second round 65 gave him an eight under par total of 133 and a one shot lead over Briton Danny Willett who fired a second successive 67.

Scotland's European Ryder Cup team member Paul Lawrie remains firmly in contention to follow up his win last weekend in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles as his second round 66 left him lying third, a further shot back.

David Howell, Marcus Fraser, Robert Coles and Tommy Fleetwood, courtesy of a 66, were a shot further adrift.

Quesne's compatriot, Gregory Bourdy, was unable to match the fireworks that saw him top the leaderboard after a first round 63, the Frenchman slipping to a share of 13th with a 75.

Quesne meanwhile is aiming to add to his maiden Tour win in the Open de Andalucia in March.

"I took a lot of pleasure from how I played today," said Quesne.

"I hit so many good shots; I managed to stay calm and I holed a lot of putts.

"My final round in Andalucia was the best of my career, because it was under a lot of pressure.

"But today was probably my second best, because the conditions were very tough and I hardly missed a shot. So I'm very happy."

Willett, who also won for the first time in the BMW International Open in June, wants to experience the winning feeling again too.

"It's all too easy to switch off mentally after a win, because you've got your card for another couple of years," said the Englishman.

"It depends what kind of personality you are really, but I want to taste that winning feeling every week I pitch up.

"It isn't realistic, but that's the goal, and as long as you're in with a decent shout come Sunday, you know you've played well."

Georgia says armed raid was in "enemy's" interests

TBILISI (Reuters) - Georgian officials said on Thursday gunmen who took hostages on its territory were Russian nationals and suggested they acted in the interests of the "enemy", while stopping short of blaming Moscow for the raid.

Georgian forces shot dead 11 gunmen and three of its soldiers were killed in an operation on August 29 to free hostages near the frontier with Russia's Dagestan region.

"We understand quite well in whose interests it was, it can only be in the interests of our enemy," President Mikheil Saakashvili was shown on Georgian television as telling residents of Lapankuri village, from where people were taken hostage.

Russian security officials denied there had been any illegal border crossings in the area.

Pro-Western Saakashvili, in power since 2004, is facing growing competition from a newly-created opposition group ahead of parliamentary elections in October.

Georgia fought a brief war with Russia in August 2008 after which Moscow recognized Georgian regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent countries and increased its military presence in the regions.

Visiting Lapankuri, Saakashvili said "the enemy" was testing the combat-readiness of the Georgian army and assured Georgians they were well protected.

Parts of Georgia's porous border with Russia lie in remote areas of the Caucasus mountains and there have been reports in the past of fighters from Russia's turbulent North Caucasus infiltrating Georgian territory.

During its second war with Chechnya, launched in 1999, Moscow said Georgia's Pankisi Gorge on the border with Chechnya was being used as a shelter for militants. Georgia says there are no longer any militants from Russia there.

Georgia's Deputy Defence Minister Nodar Kharshiladze said the Lapankuri gunmen were Russian nationals from North Caucasus.

"As a result of the operation we have identified those combatants were Russian citizens," he told reporters in Tbilisi.

"Their origin is Northern Caucasus," he added.

"We hope that after apprehensions of some terrorists alive we will have more information. Investigation will be continued in this direction."

?Embrace risk. That is the key to improving at anything. Without the willingness to go down the uncharted path, you will not learn, you will not improve, and you will not grow. This might sound a little preachy, but it is a life lesson I have learned again and again as a climber, a mountaineer, and a freelance photographer. Safety is an illusion. Get over it. You cannot control everything in this world. I have learned to learn from my mistakes because I learn more from my mistakes than I do from my successes. When I make a mistake I own up to it, and then plot how to avoid making that mistake again. Making a mistake is just part of the learning experience. It makes me aware of certain possibilities and outcomes. Sometimes it is only by making a mistake that you stumble onto an unexpected result, or image in this case, and by analyzing that mistake, you can create a whole new look.

Creative people need risk to ?break on through? to the next level; here I am making a reference to one of The Doors? most popular songs. The musical group creatively pushed the envelope, were unconventional (in the extreme), and took chances with their music and lyrics. I use the band as an example only to make the point that if you can?t embrace risk, your images will never be more than mediocre. And that is a sure way to underachieve.

Red Bull is a company that embraces risk and asks their photographers to do the same. I had only nine seconds total to capture the action for this B.A.S.E. jumping assignment. In this image, Jon DeVore of the Red Bull Air Force Team, is leaping off a 3,200-foot cliff in southwestern Utah in his wingsuit. I was hanging over the edge of the cliff just next to Jon as he jumped. I wore a climbing harness and was attached to three small bushes that might have held my weight but I never fully committed my weight on the rope.

As a climber, a mountaineer, and an adventurer, I implore you to get out and experience your own adventures. They might just be the best motivator for your photography. Stepping out of your comfort zone provides everyone with a chance to grow. The next step is to take the knowledge you have learned and put it into practice repeatedly and as often as possible. Dare to fail. Aim high. Dream up an image you want to create and then go out and try to create it. If you don?t get the result you want, try again and again until you do. Practice makes perfect, or at least in photography it makes your images better. Get inspired, get motivated, and get moving. That is the key to photography.?

The three paragraphs above are from my most recent book, Exposed: Inside the Life and Images of a Pro Photographer. They sum up my credo as an adventure sports photographer. Over the last sixteen years, I have pursued my craft?and my profession?with a fervent passion. I have also been fortunate to work with clients such as Nikon, Apple, Adobe, Red Bull, National Geographic, Outside, Men?s Journal, and Sports Illustrated. I have crafted an adventurous lifestyle that has allowed me to witness and document some truly remarkable feats of physical prowess.

The cover of my latest book, ?Exposed: Inside the Life and Images of a Pro Photographer?

In this blog post, I want to encourage you to ?embrace risk? and invite adventure into your life and your photography. I am not advising that anyone take huge risks physically, but a ?willingness to go down the uncharted path? and explore those things that make you uncomfortable will open up a whole new world. As an example, I will share a bit of my story and how taking on a new sport changed my life in a way I never could have imagined.

In my last year of studying physics at the University of Texas at Austin, I took a weekend rock climbing course through the outdoor recreation program. I was a shy kid. I lacked self-confidence?and I was a little afraid of the risks involved in rock climbing. But I had?and still have?an inclination to run headlong into situations I find challenging. Little did I know at the time, but that rock climbing course would be the start of a whole new career.

Over the next few years I became obsessed with climbing in all its forms: rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. As I gained confidence in my skills as a climber I also gained confidence in myself. When I was a teenager I had explored photography as part of my art studies. It was climbing that brought me back to photography and it was the confidence I gained through climbing that gave me the courage to pursue a career as an adventure sports photographer. I started out shooting rock climbing, then branched out into just about every other adventure sport.

In this image, Chris Sharma is hanging from the biggest hold on this very difficult climb while ?Deep Water Soloing? in Mallorca, Spain. This image was shot early on in my career while on assignment for Men?s Journal. And yes, he is not wearing a harness or a rope. Deep Water Soloing is a form of rock climbing where you climb solo without a rope and if you fall the water catches you. I am hanging next to Sharma on a rope to get the shot.

In the beginning, I shot everything ?on spec,? meaning I went out and created the images and then licensed them to various magazines and climbing companies after the fact. This was, and still is, a risky way of doing business. I never knew where my next paycheck was coming from or when it would show up. My first big break was an assignment for Men?s Journal shooting rock climbing in Mallorca, Spain. That came to me about five years into my career. My second big break was an assignment to shoot freeriding (a cousin of mountain biking) for the first version of Adobe Lightroom. After that assignment, advertising and editorial assignments started to come more frequently and with increasing regularity.

I don?t want to give the impression that my career was a joyride on easy street?just the opposite, it was a constant struggle to make it work. Working as a freelance photographer involves an insane amount of hard work, stress and risk. For me, that risk was both physical, as an adventure photographer, and financial. Many of my early climbing trips were sponsored by VISA and MASTERCARD, both of which were stored safely in my wallet. It took me years to pay off those climbing trips and my camera gear but to this day I don?t regret it one bit. I certainly don?t recommend using your credit cards to fund your business adventure but at the time I had no other options.

Above is an image of YouTube superstar Danny MacAskill that was shot for Red Bull. Working with Danny was a supreme pleasure and his story is incredibly inspiring. His story is a perfect example of a motivated, and extremely talented individual, showing what they are capable of and reaping the benefits of being able to show that to the world, via YouTube.

Even now, sixteen years later, I can?t tell you exactly where my income will come from six or more months from now. I have to have faith that, like the last sixteen years, the assignments and the work will come to me. This certainly isn?t the job for anyone that wants some vestige of financial security in the form of a steady job. But for me, the rewards of this job are that I am able to see and create images of stupendous feats of bravery in the outdoors. My life of risk has also allowed me to follow my passions to places I never thought I would ever visit and being able to share these adventures with the world, through my clients, is a great pleasure.

It is only by pursuing risk on a continual basis that my career has grown, and blossomed into what it is today. I still seek out challenging assignments, new sports and even new genres of photography. I still long for that next adventure. If I don?t have an adventure on the horizon?something to look forward to?I start to get a little stir-crazy. I am not an adrenaline junkie, as so many ?extreme? athletes are labeled. I am just addicted to having adventures.

One of my latest passions is capturing the dynamic sport of surfing. This image of pro-surfer Dylan Longbottom surfing a barrel at Teahupo?o was shot in Tahiti specifically for my book Exposed.

When I wrote Exposed last year, I had serious doubts about the topics covered in the book and if they would be of interest to anyone at all. The idea to write about the realities of working as a professional photographer, the stories behind the images and detailing how a handful of my images were created was hashed out prior to starting the book with Ted Waitt, an editor at Peachpit. I wanted to be extremely open and honest about my experiences as a pro photographer including all of the embarrassing moments so that the reader could see how I got from A to B to C.

As an example of hard work, creating this image of professional rock climber Timy Fairfield involved lugging over 200-pounds of lighting gear and equipment up into the cave in 98-degree heat?not to mention that fact that Timy still had to climb this difficult route in very tough conditions.

When the first few reviews of Exposed came in a few months ago I was amazed. The reviews were well beyond anything I had imagined. Yet again, taking a risk paid off.

It is my hope that this blog post will at the very least make you sit up and think about how you can add some adventure to your life and inspire your photography. Embracing risk may not be easy, and it may not be pleasant, but it will certainly make life interesting?and interesting often makes for phenomenal photographs.

While shooting an assignment for Men?s Fitness with the Henry 1 Search and Rescue team in Santa Rosa, California, I saw the opportunity for this image and had only twenty minutes to create it. This image was only possible because of the digital preview available on the rear LCD of my Nikon camera, which allowed me to refine the lighting in a matter of minutes.

Thank you to Scott, Brad and the gang at Kelby Media for asking me to write a guest blog post. It is a great honor to be included among the wonderful photographers here on Scott?s blog. And thank you for taking the time to read this guest blog post.

Chile Supreme Court rejects $4.5B power plant

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Chile's Supreme Court has rejected plans to build a $4.5 billion coal-fired power plant and port to serve northern Chile's copper mines, ruling that the project's Brazilian and German investors failed to prove they can protect the surrounding environment.

Critics said the Castilla project developed by Sao Paulo-based MPX Energia SA would have been one of the most polluting in Latin America. Former President Michelle Bachelet's government turned it down, but after lobbying by Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista, her successor Sebastian Pinera allowed to go forward.

MPX had promised $575 million to mitigate pollution from the plant, which would have produced 2,100 megawatts by 2020, increasing Chile's electricity capacity by more than 10 percent. The court ruled Tuesday after MPX failed to persuade Chileans they could live with the contamination.

Springboks gamble with squad for Australasia

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer gambled Wednesday by choosing uncapped Johan Goosen and Duane Vermeulen in his Rugby Championship squad for away Tests against Australia and New Zealand next month.

Fly-half Goosen and No 8 Vermeulen have just returned to Currie Cup action after long injury lay-offs and respective coaches Naka Drotske of Cheetahs and Allister Coetzee of Stormers believe they are not ready for Test action.

However, Meyer is desperate to silence critics after the public and media turned on him following a undeserved 16-16 draw away to newcomers Argentina last weekend in the southern hemisphere championship.

The coach defended his selections in a statement: "While Duane and Johan are medically fit, their coaches felt it necessary that they get more game time in the Currie Cup this weekend.

"But as we do not have a lot of time to prepare and need as much time with them as possible to get them used to our structures and game plans, the decision was taken to select them for the tour.

"I regard both of them as world-class players. If it was not for injuries, Duane would have been a Springbok long ago. I also believe Johan has a long career ahead of him at Test level."

Vermeulen has been kept out of the Springobk team by now injured Pierre Spies while 20-year-old Goosen is a phenomenal place kicker who finished sixth among the leading Super 15 scorers despite missing half the season.

Areas of major concern in the team have been fly-half, where Morne Steyn has lost some of his place-kicking magic and lacks flair, and a back row that came off second best to Los Pumas in the breakdown battle.

The Springboks face Australia, reeling from two defeats in as many weekends by New Zealand, on September 8 in Perth and the rampant All Blacks in Dunedin a week later.

South Africa have poor away records against the Wallabies and the All Blacks and Meyer has added four players and axed two from the squad that travelled to Argentina.

Apart from the introduction of Goosen and Vermeulen, centre Juan de Jongh and flank Francois Louw from English club Bath are recalled while wing-cum-centre JJ Engelbrecht and loose forward Keegan Daniel drop out.

De Jongh was part of the squad for the 27-6 home Test victory over Argentina and openside flank Louw comes back after being ignored since the Springobks lost to Australia in a 2011 World Cup quarter-final.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (2013)

You won't find a version number on Facebook, or Google. When they want to make changes or enhancements, they just do it, and you see the change immediately. The designers at Kaspersky Lab are aiming for a similar approach to antivirus protection, so technically the latest Kaspersky Anti-Virus doesn't have a year or version number. You won't see 2013 on the box of the latest version )which lists for $39.95 direct or $59.95 for three licenses). Old habits die hard, though, so "ANTI-VIRUS 2013" remains blazoned across the tool's title bar.

There's little visible difference between this edition and last year's, but under the hood you'll find some shiny new features. In particular, Kaspersky has added automatic exploit prevention, which foils many types of exploits by actively protecting most exploit targets.

Kaspersky Security Network
File and domain reputation tracking through Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) have also been enhanced in the current edition. This online database tracks over half a billion known good objects and almost 70 million dangerous ones. When an unknown file appears on a system participating in KSN, it gets uploaded for analysis automatically. This lets Kaspersky catch zero-day threats, threats too new to have traditional signatures.

To get full protection from Kaspersky Anti-Virus, you must keep KSN turned on. For my testing purposes, that creates a bit of a problem. Every single one of my malware samples was already "seen" by KSN when I tested Kaspersky PURE 2.0 Total Security earlier this year. That means Kaspersky has had months to fine-tune their handling these exact threats, giving it something of an unfair advantage over other vendors.

As you'll see, Kaspersky Anti-Virus scored significantly better than Kaspersky PURE, especially in malware removal.

Easy Install, Lengthy Scans
Getting Kaspersky installed and updated on ten of my twelve test systems was a snap. In one case it reported that malware was attempting URL redirection to prevent activation and updates. Kaspersky simply fixed the problem and continued, where other antivirus tools have been defeated.

The Kaspersky installer failed on one test system that only functions in Safe Mode. The product installed but would not launch on another test system. A session with Kaspersky's free Virus Removal Tool solved both of those problems.

On almost every system, at least one threat triggered an offer by Kaspersky to perform special disinfection with reboot. If you accept this offer (as I always did) you need to bear in mind that when it's ready, it will just reboot. Don't keep working during the special disinfection process.

In some cases, special disinfection interrupted a full scan; after reboot, the full scan resumed where it left off. Full cleanup required multiple sessions and multiple full scans in many cases. One system offered special disinfection for the same threat over and over. After a couple days, a new update allowed the antivirus to complete disinfection of that threat.

By default, Kaspersky does not remove adware, commercial keyloggers, and other "legal software that can be used by criminals." For full protection you'll want to examine any such reports and, in most cases, choose to delete the threat. I did that in every case.

A full scan on my standard clean test system took 37 minutes, slightly faster than the current average. Kaspersky avoids rescanning files that have been identified as safe, so a repeat scan took less than two minutes.

New Face Paint Protects Soldiers Against Bomb Blasts

If I remember those county-fair firefighter demonstrations well enough, one of the major problems firefighters face is that they're already too scary.

In a house fire, children are startled awake by alarms, surrounded by disorienting smoke, and seeing flashing lights outside their window. Then suddenly a grotesque figure with a misshapen body and respirator mask comes bursting in to their room carrying a giant axe, with flames surrounding them. The children scream and run away, frantically hoping to escape their certain doom at the hands of the demon from the hallway. It's no use. Their shocked scream was heard, and the monster lumbers toward them, making unintelligible noises that sound almost like speech. Finally the great beast peels off his face to show a human underneath. "It's okay, I'm a fireman. I'll take you outside." Before the children can fully understand what's going on, they're being carried toward the door, and it's so hot they can't think straight. Maybe this is alright. At the door now, and there's people outside. Then there's mommy and everything's alright.

Keeping whatever remnants of human appearance a firefighter has is a good thing.

>> we are telling them to get out. based on the storm surge projections, above the levy in those areas, we are see more above the leavies on both side of the river. our pair sirish is about 60 miles from the gulf. people are heading up the highway now, loading campers, boats, getting out and it is a good warning to talk because in the middle of the parish where we have the low levies, we will see this highway possibly go under water.

>> you're saying people are getting out -- i have not had a chance to survey a lot of freeways coming straight from the airport to this location. the scene where cars are backed up and lines at gas stations in our area?

>> absolutely. starting at 5:00 this morning, i was on the road and there were lines at gas stations in our parish . of course the main city of new orleans is not evacuating. through the city and out the i-10, it is not like it would be for a major evacuation. but in our parish , there is one road in and one road out and it is steady traffic flowing out the parish as we speak.

>> billy , let me ask you, and jefferson parish , impact seven years to the day, this storm isaac could roll through your community as category 1 even as experts are telling us possibly category 2. what are your thoughts on this right now? what are your words to the people listening in your community?

>> yeah, i didn't close an eye last night and i got calls all night from people that say, could this be another katrina ? and obviously, the size of the storm, it could have been. had it begun picking up speed right off of florida, we could have seen that. but people, like i, did not want it go to bed last night and wake up this morning and say, it strengthens, and now we're getting hit with a major blow. we were lucky, it didn't gain that kind of speed. it still has potential to do damage but nothing like katrina . and we are thankful for that. but because of the anniversary and because clackamas pair irn was first hit by katrina , people were on edge and continue to stay on edge.

>> right. billy , one of the things folks in this region admire about you is that you are a straight shooter . i talked to the army corps of engineers . they have great confidence and i have walked along where the levy was breached in this area. it looks very different than what it was prior to katrina . they walked me through the pump systems here. all of the billions of dollars put in place here. as i started this sentence saying you're a straight shooter , what do you say? tell me straight. do you have confidence in the engineers and in fema as well?

>> absolutely. er with evacuating east bay but where the levies finished in the north end of our parish ,er with bringing our -- we are evacuating people to a shelter in bell chase. it is now behind a hundred year protection, behind core levees. normally we would evacuation people three hours away to north louisiana . but we are bringing citizens to the north end of the parish where the levies are finished. we have over a billion dollars yet to be spent to build a levy. if those were finished, we would not be evacuating at this time. so yes, they have done a good job. a lot is yet to be done. but we feel a lot better today than we did before katrina .

>> billy nungesser, thank you so much for your time, billy . we will be taked out here for hours and days to come to bring you the latest on this tropical storm isaac as it has new orleans in its crosshairs.

Chael Sonnen?s pizzeria selling the Jon Jones special ? full of chicken and cheese

Jon Jones' refusal of a bout with Chael Sonnen may have led to a cancellation of fights set for Saturday night, but it also led to a whole new pizza at Sonnen's Mean Streets Pizza. TMZ found Sonnen's pizzeria has a whole new pizza in Jones' honor.

Though it doesn't sound particularly appetizing, the pizza is full of chicken and cheese. Sonnen throws two more barbs at Jones by saying the deal is only good until "the chicken runs out," and offers delivery so to "avoid a DUI." Jones crashed his Bentley into a tree when driving drunk in May.

If you're in West Linn, Ore., check out Mean Streets and tell us if the Jon Jones pizza is any good.

GOP going forward with convention despite storm

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention sputters to life Monday with the lonely banging of a gavel in a mostly empty hall, then hits full speed on Tuesday, just as forecasters say Tropical Storm Isaac could reach hurricane strength and make landfall somewhere along a stretch from New Orleans to the Florida Panhandle.

"Our sons are already in Tampa and they say it's terrific there, a lot of great friends. And we're looking forward to a great convention," Romney said as he rehearsed his convention speech at a New Hampshire high school auditorium. He suggested there were no thoughts of canceling the gathering.

Romney said he hopes those in the storm's path are "spared any major destruction." Looking ahead, the former Massachusetts governor signaled that he and his wife Ann are close to finalizing their speeches.

Party Chairman Reince Priebus, for his part, insisted the GOP can "have a great week" despite the storm bearing down on the Gulf Coast.

But Sally Bradshaw, a Florida Republican and longtime senior aide to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was not so sanguine. "It's a mess all around and it's fraught with risk," she said. "It's not good for anybody ? particularly the people impacted by the storm."

It was hardly the opening splash that convention planners had hoped for, and risked the juxtaposition of Republicans partying as the storm heads toward the gulf ? almost exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

"Obviously we want to pray for anyone that's in the pathway of this storm," Priebus said Monday on NBC's "Today" show, "but the message is still the same: that all Americans deserve a better future and that this president ... didn't keep the promises he made in 2008."

The party hastily rewrote the convention script to present the extravaganza's prime rituals and headline speakers later in the week, and further changes were possible. Convention planners said Monday's speakers would be worked into the schedule later in the week.

"We're going to continue with our Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday schedule," said Russ Schriefer, the chief convention planner.

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan decided to head to Florida on Tuesday, a day later than expected. He was in his hometown of Janesville, Wis., on Monday to speak to students at his former high school.

The storm was a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

The concern was two-fold: that Tampa, hosting thousands of GOP delegates, would get sideswiped by the storm; and that it would be unseemly to engage in days of political celebration if Isaac made a destructive landfall anywhere on U.S. soil.

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit," said Rich Galen, a veteran Republican consultant in Washington. "Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history."

In Washington, aides said Obama was being updated at the White House on the storm. He was still planning his two-day campaign trip to Iowa, Colorado and Virginia, beginning Tuesday morning.

For all the weather concerns, a mix of partly sunny skies, fast-moving clouds and occasional rain covered Tampa at midmorning Monday as the outer bands of the tropical storm delivered unsettled conditions.

Traffic was light as streets around the arena were blocked off and security patrolled the area.

Republicans hoped another distracting tempest would blow over, too, concerning abortion. The Obama campaign and its allies have doubled down in efforts to exploit remarks more than a week ago by Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP's candidate for a Senate seat from Missouri, that a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The claim is unsupported by medical evidence. The congressman quickly apologized but resisted Romney's pressure to drop out of the race.

Romney, in a Fox interview, said in comments broadcast Sunday that the fallout over Akin's remarks "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women," adding: "It really is sad, isn't it? With all the issues that America faces, for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level."

Under the reworked convention schedule, organizers planned a pro forma opening Monday afternoon, lasting just 10 minutes. Priebus was to gavel the convention to order, then immediately recess. Few delegates were expected to attend. In the only bit of convention-hall theater, a debt clock was to be set in motion, to tally the nation's red ink during the convention.

Speakers who had been scheduled for Monday were to start making the case against Obama, under the day's theme, "we can do better." That theme now will be threaded through the following three days, Schriefer said. "Even though the days will be abbreviated, I absolutely believe we'll be able to get our message out."

The roll call of state delegations affirming Romney as the party's nominee now is to unfold Tuesday, an evening capped by speeches from Ann Romney and an assortment of GOP governors. Ryan gets the prime-time spotlight Wednesday, and Romney closes out the spectacle Thursday night, his springboard into the final leg of the contest. That's all if the storm brings no further complications.

So far, many delegates were taking the shakeup in stride. "People are pretty resilient, and people knew going in that there were some weather issues," said Pat Shortridge, the Minnesota state GOP chairman, from Lino Lakes, Minn. "I don't think it's dampened enthusiasm."

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal hadn't officially canceled his plans to speak at the convention, but said he won't leave Louisiana "as long as we're in harm's way."

Weather was recognized as potential trouble when Republicans chose to hold their convention in politically vital Florida during hurricane season, a decision made well before Romney locked up the nomination. And it's clear that memories of Hurricane Katrina, and the failure of a Republican administration to respond effectively to its Gulf Coast devastation in 2005, are hanging over Tampa now. Republicans have been so sensitive to the political risks from natural disasters that they delayed the start of their national convention by a day in 2008, when Hurricane Gustav bore down on the Gulf, far from their meeting in Minnesota.

Polls find a tight race, and it's one that is likely to be settled in a small number of battleground states.

An estimated $500 million has been spent on television commercials so far by the two candidates, their parties and supporting outside groups, nearly all of it in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. Those states account for 100 electoral votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House. Republicans hope to expand the electoral map to include Pennsylvania, Michigan, perhaps Ryan's Wisconsin and even Minnesota, states with 68 electoral votes combined.

All four are usually reliably Democratic in presidential campaigns. Yet Romney has a financial advantage over the president, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and a move by the Republicans into any of them could force Obama to dip into his own campaign treasury in regions he has considered relatively safe.

Republican office-holders past and present said the economy is the key if Romney is to expand his appeal to women and Hispanic voters.

"We have to point out that the unemployment rate among young women is now 16 percent, that the unemployment rate among Hispanics is very high, that jobs and the economy are more important, perhaps, than maybe other issues," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

Bush agreed, saying that Romney "can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth." If he succeeds, "I think people will move back towards the Republican side," the former Florida governor added.

Obama leads Romney among female voters and by an overwhelming margin among Hispanics, but trails substantially among men.

Restaurant Review*** Food Society has it all ? Sydney Social 101

On Friday night I had the pleasure of being invited to Food Society to experience its cuisine and of course, vodka! Not only has the Sydney restaurant/bar become synonymous with exceptional food and the place to head to when you?re in need of a tasty morsel with European flair, and a good dash of cool ambience, it now boasts a new chef in Ali Bahmad, and a vodka bar which offers as comprehensive a vodka range as anything you?d experience in its native Poland.

The vodka specialists

I had walked past the venue before and thought how quaint it looked and how I?d like to go there one day! It?s located next to another of my favourites, Cafe Pacifico on Riley Street in Darlinghurst. If you?re ever in the area there?s lots of places ?off the beaten track? in the surrounds of the area.

Back to the case in point, ha! In addition to Food Society priding itself on educating Sydneysiders on the merits of enjoying vodka on its own, they also work closely with a Melbourne mixologist to incorporate these interesting flavours into a new cocktail list!

After we had been escorted to our seats, our waiter for the evening, Matt told us about the imported vodka range, which he advised is over 70-deep, and will eventually boast 100 variants of the spirit! Impressive!

Some of the quirkier flavours include: honey, orange and clove, raspberry, quince, apple, cucumber, burnt caramel, peanut butter, jelly and coconut!

The Czech and Polish beers were yum!

My favourite was the honey vodka, it is tradition to drink the vodka as a shot with your guests at the table. We of course invited Matt to join us! In addition to the vodka, Food Society of course places equal importance on the fare it serves, which is created esteemed chef Ali Bahmad and his team, who says: ?I?ve always had a passion for all things artistic, whether it is theatre, movies, music or art. Food and cooking is my outlet to showcase my artistic side and talent.?

The starter ? ?cigar? ? Spinich, mint and feta

Ali hails from Aqua Luna Bar and Restaurant, La Sala, Sake Restaurant & Bar, and now, head chef at Food Society ? impressive resume hey!

Fried Cauliflower ? Surprisingly amazing! Like healthy wedges

Matt explained to use that Food Society opened its doors in August 2011, and that they had recently celebrated their first birthday! Many happy returns I hope!!

The slow cooked lamb ribs were out of this world! The best I?ve ever had ? The meat literally fell off the bone

The venue itself takes you on a trip back in time to the 1950s ? it was like stepping into grandma?s comfy lounge, where an eclectic mix of modern European fare awaited. We went on a journey that involved a love affair with good food and exceptional vodka [and other spirits], it definitely didn?t disappoint and I?d go as far to say that it was one of the best meals I?ve had in Sydney!

Equally the duck was phenomenal!

Starting the first weekend in Spring Food Society is launching ?Secret Women?s Business? which is ?kind of high tea, kind of naughty?? a canap? sort of degustation and amazing flavours in vodka ?sippers?, it?s not your average high tea?. bookings only, it?s a great afternoon with the girls??Get it booked in! Ha!

Drill Gun Power Screwdriver
Drill Gun Power Screwdriver | US$49.95 | www.gadgetsandgear.com

assuming that you are a home improvement Tim?s fan, then we suppose home improvement tools are a big part of your life against all your Mrs disapproval (what? don?t you already have a power screwdriver?). since you already at it, why not add the Drill Gun Power Screwdriver to your arsenal and spice things up a little? fashioned after a revolver pistol, it certainly looks nothing like a power screwdriver which probably will help you avert another nagging or questioning by your Mrs. the marvelous thing about this tool is, it is a very well thought out piece of equipment: it has an integrated LED light up where the gun barrel is and the revolver?s cylinder doubles as a holder for six screw bits. clever indeed but don?t ever wield this baby anywhere outside of your own domain because likely, the next think you will hear is police siren wailing and you know what?s going to happen after that, don?t you? oh, it is juiced by a rechargeable battery that provides a good 3 Nm of twisting power and spins it at 180 RPM. you can get this extra manly power screwdriver for an introductory price of $39.90 (usual $49.90) from Gadgets and Gear. hit the jump a few larger looks.

Tech Tips for Entrepreneurs: How to Stay Productive and Let ...

August 25, 2012

Page 1 Page 2

When you?re running a business, you and your team are often faced with the task of complete several projects simultaneously. This leads to increased multitasking in the workplace.

In general, there is an ongoing debate about the quality of work completed while multitasking. Women are often both praised and ridiculed for their ability to multitask. While it is not specifically a female trait, it does seem to be less common in men.

But one thing is clear.

Some tasks can be combined to improve efficiency.

Tech Inspired Productivity

In today?s technology driven world, our electronic devices multitask for us. Most smartphones come fully equipped with a calculator, calendar, and apps for any occasion. We can perform most business functions on a computer, which streamlines processes. What?s more, when technology multitasks for us, the quality of deliverables and productivity is not lost.

Here are four effective, tech-inspired ways to combine tasks to maximize productivity and efficiency.

1. Organization: Keep everything in one place.

You can lose a lot of time in a business just by looking for things.

Being organized will save you time. And interestingly enough, I?ve heard that if time could be measured in weight, you could save 2,000 lbs of time just by being organized. Isn?t that a load off your shoulders?

There are many ways to become organized. First, make sure all of the software you need to do business is on your computer or easily accessible in the cloud. Also ensure that all company computers have network access. Everything is now in one location, but can be accessed from any work computer. Once your team develops a habit of saving files to the network, they will be much easier to locate.

2. Find a software that does everything you need.

Today, small businesses can operate like multinational companies. This starts with improved access to enterprise level software that meets the unique needs of a small business.

There are numerous databases and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems that will keep track of various functions within your company: Accounts Payable, Sales Orders, Payroll, and Project Management. You can store all of that information in one easily searchable database. Also, open source ERP solutions on the market are scalable and effective for almost any business.

Customization is the key to efficiency. Tailor your office management solutions to your office.

Seniors at Risk of Hunger Due to Cuts to US Food ... - Disabled World

Feeding America Warns That Cuts To The Food Stamp Program Will Put Nation's Seniors At Risk Of Hunger - Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger relief organization, warns that pending cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) will put many of our nation's seniors at risk of hunger.

The Farm Bill passed by the House Agriculture Appropriations Committee in July cuts over $16 billion from SNAP. These cuts, if enacted, would cause two to three million individuals to lose their food assistance entirely. An additional 500,000 households would have their SNAP benefits cut by an average $90 per month.

"For many seniors living on fixed incomes, SNAP is a lifeline. Far too many of our nation's elderly are having to choose between putting food on the table and other household necessities," said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America. "Seniors have given us the America that we have today, we owe it to them to make sure that they have enough resources to fill their pantries and their prescriptions."

SNAP is a crucial safety net for low-income seniors, who often are at greater risk of food insecurity:

  • SNAP households with seniors receive an average per person benefit of only $111 per month, or $1.23 per person per meal. This meager benefit level underscores the importance of protecting SNAP benefits from cuts.
  • Nearly 16 percent of SNAP households include seniors.
  • Only 34 percent of eligible seniors participate in SNAP, in part due to program stigma and participation barriers.[i] Increasing duplication and administrative burden in the enrollment and eligibility determination process will further dampen participation rates.
  • The prevalence of food insecurity among older adults can have serious health consequences. Food insecure seniors are more likely to have lower intakes of major vitamins, significantly more likely to be in poor or fair health, and more likely to have limitations in activities of daily living.
  • Low-income seniors on fixed incomes must sometimes make difficult choices between important necessities. Among Feeding America food bank client households with seniors, 30 percent reported choosing between paying for food and paying for medical care. Additionally, 35 percent reported choosing between food and utilities, and 26 percent reported choosing between food and gas for a car.
  • Changing demographics will have a profound impact on the need for nutrition assistance among older adults. By 2020, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will increase by 36 percent over 2010, and the number of food insecure seniors is projected to increase by 50 percent by 2025.
  • Senior SNAP households are disproportionately likely to see their benefits cut under proposed SNAP cuts. Elderly households are more likely to make use of the "Heat and Eat" policy when enrolling in SNAP and thus are disproportionately impacted by the policy change. Additionally, "Heat and Eat" states have a greater share of SNAP households with seniors to begin with. In the 15 "Heat and Eat" states (CT, DC, DE, ME, MA, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA, & WI), 18.8 percent of households include an elderly person, compared to about 15.5 percent of households nationally.[ii]

About Feeding America - Feeding America provides low-income individuals and families with the fuel to survive and even thrive. As the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity, our network members supply food to more than 37 million Americans each year, including 14 million children and 3 million seniors. Serving the entire United States, more than 200 member food banks support 61,000 agencies that address hunger in all of its forms. For more information on how you can fight hunger in your community and across the country, visit http://www.feedingamerica.org. • Food Stamps - The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, helps low-income people buy food. Although it is a federal government program, it is run by state or local agencies. Anyone can apply for SNAP, but you must meet certain conditions. Police kill gunman outside Empire State Building

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jeffrey Johnson hid behind a car in his business suit and tie near the Empire State Building, waiting for the man he blamed for costing him his job. He put a gun to the executive's head and fired five times, then walked off with his briefcase into the morning rush of midtown Manhattan.

Minutes later, Johnson was dead in front of the landmark skyscraper, killed by police Friday in a chaotic confrontation that sent bullets ricocheting, wounded nine other people and left sidewalks near one of the world's best-known landmarks spattered with blood.

Police released dramatic surveillance video that showed the confrontation lasted only a few seconds. Johnson was walking rapidly down the street trailed by two police officers when he stopped, wheeled around and pulled out a gun.

About a dozen people ran for their lives, including two small children who were just feet away from Johnson. He pointed the gun at the officers, who quickly fired at him.

Johnson dropped his briefcase, fell to his knees and then collapsed on the ground.

The bystanders likely were hit by police officers' stray gunfire, some of it bullets that rebounded off planters in front of the skyscraper and grazed pedestrians. The two officers fired 16 shots. The surveillance video shows Johnson pointing his weapon at police, but it's likely he did not get a chance to fire, investigators said.

Startled New Yorkers looked up from their morning routines in the crowded business district to see people sprawled in the streets bleeding and a tarp covering the body in front of the tourist landmark.

"I was on the bus and people were yelling 'get down, get down," said accountant Marc Engel. "I was thinking, 'You people are crazy, no one is shooting in the middle of midtown Manhattan at 9 o'clock in the morning."

It was over in seconds, he said ? "a lot of pop, pop, pop, pop, one shot after the other." Afterwards he saw sidewalks littered with the wounded, including one man "dripping enough blood to leave a stream."

Johnson, who neighbors had seen leave his apartment in a suit every day since he was laid off a year ago, had worked for six years for Hazan Imports and was let go when the company downsized, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Police were looking into his relationship with the victim, Steven Ercolino, the company's vice president of sales, who had traded accusations of harassment with Johnson when he worked there. Johnson, 58, also blamed Ercolino for his layoff, saying that he hadn't aggressively marketed Johnson's new T-shirt line, police spokesman Paul Browne said.

After waiting for Ercolino, 41, to come to work, Johnson walked up to him, pulled out a .45-caliber pistol and fired at his head, Kelly said. After he fell to the ground, Johnson stood over him and shot four more times, a witness told investigators.

"Jeffrey just came from behind two cars, pulled out his gun, put it up to Steve's head and shot him," said Carol Timan, whose daughter, Irene, was walking to Hazan Imports at the time with Ercolino.

A construction worker who saw the shooting followed Johnson and alerted two police officers, a detail regularly assigned to patrol city landmarks such as the 1,454-foot skyscraper since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, officials said.

Kelly said the officers who caught up to Johnson had "a gun right in their face" and "responded quickly, and they responded appropriately."

"These officers, having looked at the tape myself, had absolutely no choice," Kelly said.

A witness had told police that Johnson fired at the officers, but authorities say ballistics evidence doesn't support that. Johnson's weapon held seven rounds, they said. He fired five times at Ercolino, one round was still in the gun and one was ejected when officers secured it, authorities said.

Another loaded magazine was found in Johnson's briefcase.

Johnson legally bought the gun in Sarasota, Fla., in 1991, but he didn't have a required permit to possess the weapon in New York City, police said.

"New York City, as you know, is the safest big city in the country, and we are on pace to have a record low number of murders this year," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "But we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," he said of the shooting, following mass shootings a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

Robert Asika, who was shot in the right arm, said he was "100 percent positive" that a police officer had shot him. Asika, 23, sells tickets for the Empire State Building's observatory.

"When I woke up this morning, I didn't even want to go to work," he said. "Something told me not to go to work."

The wounded victims were five women and four men, authorities said. All were from New York City, except a woman from Chapel Hill, N.C. They suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries.

Ercolino's profile on the business networking site LinkedIn identified him as a vice president of sales at Hazan Import. It said he was a graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta.

He had recently moved to New Jersey after living for a time in Warwick, just north of New York City, said his eldest brother, Paul Ercolino. He grew up in Nanuet.

"He was in the prime of his life," Paul Ercolino said.

His brother was a gregarious salesman ? known to nieces and nephews as Uncle Ducky because of his nearly blond hair ? who had followed his father into the garment industry, then later worked in women's handbags and accessories.

He never mentioned to the family that he had any problems with a co-worker, Paul Ercolino said.

Hazan Import Corp. imports women's clothing and accessories, according to public records. Calls to its executives weren't immediately returned

Even after he was laid off, Johnson would leave his Upper East Side apartment building each morning in a suit, and often returned about a half hour later after going to get breakfast at McDonald's, his neighbors said.

"He was always alone," said Gisela Casella, who lived a few floors above him. "I always felt bad. I said, 'Doesn't he have a girlfriend?' I never saw him with anybody."

Internet records list him as administrator of the website for a business called St. Jolly's Art, which sold iron-on art for T-shirts, including stylized drawings of fighter planes, muscle cars and ships.

Johnson was also part of a community of bird watchers and photographers who document hawks and other wildlife living in Central Park, a few blocks from his home. In an email to another bird watcher, who works at The Associated Press, Johnson wrote tenderly about spending a winter night watching ducks in the park.

"Near midnight by the Harlem Meer I watched a little 'flotilla' of Mallards swimming and softly honking ...fifteen degree temp and they were carrying on unfazed. Just remarkable," he wrote.

Gunshots so close to one of the city's leading tourist attractions immediately prompted fears of terrorism, but federal officials said that wasn't the case, and a guard at the skyscraper said it didn't involve the parts of the building where tourists gather to visit the skyscraper.

Metal detectors and bag searchers have been standard at the 102-story skyscraper since 1997, when a gunman opened fire on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building, killing one tourist and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself.

The skyscraper remained open Friday throughout the mayhem, although the tourist attraction's workers became witnesses.

"We were just working here and we just heard bang, bang, bang!" said Mohammed Bachchu, a worker at a nearby souvenir shop.

He said he rushed from the building and saw seven people lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Queens resident Rebecca Fox said she saw people running down the street and initially thought it was a celebrity sighting but then saw a woman shot in the foot and a man dead on the ground.

"I was scared and shocked and literally shaking," she said.

She said police seemed to appear in seconds.

"It was like 'CSI,'" she said, "but it was real."
